Kevin wanted to commit to Patrick. However, Patrick freaked out and ran away from Kevin on the first sign that Kevin could be disloyal. Kevin wanted Patrick to trust him that he would make efforts to make the relationship work for them, but Patrick did not believe him.
Richie ran away from Patrick when he felt that he wasn't ready to meet Patrick's higher-status family. When Richie returned Patrick a few days later, Patrick became unavailable because Patrick had sex with Kevin in the mean time. Richie had to protect himself so he left.
If Patrick had trusted Kevin, and Patrick were more convinced that he wanted to be with Kevin, he might have engaged with Kevin over those disheartening signs instead of running away.
If Patrick were more convinced that he wanted to be with Richie, he would have waited him or pursued him.
The moral is that when two people love each other, they should make efforts to be together, instead of running away too soon.
