The 91st Academy Awards announced the nomination list, and "Skateboard Boy" is among the best documentary feature films, so taking advantage of this excitement, I want to share this documentary with everyone.
Other awards: The 34th American Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary (nomination), the 28th Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Documentary (nomination) and other 36 film festivals and documentary festival nominations
Speaking of skateboarding, we always think of "cool", "publicity", "exciting"... But director Liu Bing's lens did not freeze on this surface noise. His first documentary was actually him Private images of self-healing .
Liu Bing completed this work by combining the video footage of his skateboarding partners recorded from childhood to adulthood. In 90 minutes, the unfortunate childhood and struggling youth are displayed without reservation. Liu Bing selected three people (one of whom was himself) with very similar experiences: broken families, poor lives, and domestic violence .
According to a report compiled by the American Overseas Chinese News Network, one person in the United States suffers domestic violence every 9 seconds , especially housewives.
Liu Bing grew up in Rockford, an industrial area in the U.S. state of Illinois, rated as the second most dangerous city in the U.S., where unemployment and crime rates are among the best.
Zack Mulligan
Zack was born when his father was 21 years old. The parents were so young that when Zack was two years old, his biological mother left. After the father remarries, the stepmother will have a quarrel with the father over Zack. The shadows of childhood lingered.
But 15-year-old Zack, sunny, kind, and loyal, is a typical likable white boy, and outsiders can't see his lack of security. At the age of 23, before he could figure out how to live his life, Zack became a dad and welcomed his son Eliot with his girlfriend Nina.
Like him, his girlfriend, Nina, has never felt the care of his family since he was a child. No one taught Zack the cruelty of life itself, and he unknowingly followed his father's path, going from abuser to abuser.
In the end, Zack chose to escape and paralyzed himself with alcohol. Facing Liu Bing's question, he said: There are some people who can turn negative experiences into positive energy, but he is not such a person.
Keire Johnson
Growing up under domestic violence is the most distressing existence in the whole film. After his parents separated, he followed his father. His father hoped that he would inherit his father's business, and if he did not obey, he would be beaten severely. In a quarrel, the two father and son fought, and Keire chose to leave his father.
But in the end Keire chose to forgive. In front of the camera, Keire and Liu Bing had such a conversation.
Keire: I sometimes get mad at skateboarding, really mad. But at the end of the day, I'm going to love it again, and I can't be mad at it all the time.
Liu Bing: But it will hurt you. Keire: Yes, so did my dad, but I loved him to the death.
In the end, he wept with joy at finding his father's tombstone.
Liu Bing
His stepfather grew up under domestic violence, and about his story, the film shows more from the perspective of the owner of the skateboard shop, his younger brother, and his mother. In the eyes of the skate shop owner, he is a child who does not speak in the corner, and even thought he was gay at one point. And from the perspective of his half-brother and mother, we learned that the whole family was suffering from the violence of his stepfather. In this way, one person's violence led to three ruined lives .
In front of the camera, Liu Bing's mother was very uneasy. In the face of her fault, she answered with guilt, pain, and dodge. She didn't know how to make the past become the past forever, and she didn't know what to do for herself Seventeen years of cowardly apologizing and making amends. So Liu Bing finally said: "We should move on instead of living in the past" .
Life pushes the three characters to the brink of despair, and they choose to find solace in skateboarding. Unlike other skate documentaries, Skate Boy doesn't use skateboarding as a street sport to promote the subculture's presence.
The entire documentary expresses the importance of the self-recognition process far more than others. What runs through "Skateboard Boys" is a kind of self-confrontation and remodeling. This is not seen in other skateboarding documentaries. At the same time, because of the close relationship between the director and the characters in the film, everyone's emotions and weaknesses are exposed under the camera without reservation.
Skateboarder is sharp, it stings, but it's also beautiful, and it soothes.
