The Straight Story

For two hours, I was immersed in the night, quietly watching such a movie. Seeing an old man who has experienced vicissitudes of life walks through that part of his life, I feel a peace, a warmth, and a wisdom of life.
I really like this picture in the film. Soothing background music, melodious in the endless golden wheat fields, wave endless waves of wheat. A harvester slid across the land that nurtures life. Only from the light scattered on the tip of the wheat and the wheat dust raised by the harvester can I feel the agility that is immersed in the vast static state. At that moment, all the lead was washed away, and I just wanted to give my heart to nature.
The performance of Richard Farnsworth, the protagonist Alvin Straight, is really vivid. I prefer to believe that he uses his life experience and wisdom to interpret such a role. Just from his gentle and majestic eyes, I seem to be able to interpret everything he wants to express.
A 73-year-old man, a 66-year-old lawn mower, a journey of more than 300 miles, a 7-week meal and a night out, and of course, there are stories that happened along the way. An old man used his own unique way to let go of the dignity he had insisted on for ten years, to forget the discord that he once thought was irreparable, and to return to a brotherly affection. When life has entered its twilight years, looking back at the past, what else can move us, let us linger, let us worry about it, in fact, it is just that kind of person and that kind of things. It's like the starry night sky that spans our lives.
There is no preaching in the whole film. When the truth of life comes out from an old man so plainly and easily, we listen and we are convinced. When asked about the benefits of getting old, he said, “I really can’t imagine what good it would be to be blind and lame at the same time, but at the same time, at my age, I have experienced everything that I should experience in life. At least. I know how to separate the grains of wheat from the chaff, and throw away the unimportant parts." And what's so bad about getting old, "The worst thing is that you still clearly remember when you were young." Speaking of brothers’ affection, He said, "No one knows your life better than a brother who is close to you. He knows who you are and knows you better than anyone in the world." Then he told the past, "Angry, vanity, and Alcohol is mixed together, and there are two brothers who have not said a word for ten years. No matter what makes us so angry, it is no longer important. I now try to put it all behind me, I want to have peace Okay, I want to sit next to him and
watch the stars together, just like we did many years ago." At the end, the brothers finally met and looked at each other for a moment. The older brother saw the old lawn mower and said to his younger brother. The first sentence in ten years, "Did you drive this thing all the way to see me?" "Yes." There were tears in my brother's eyes. Needless to say, everything is redundant. The starlight in the sky still flickers like a child. Even though those two eyes have seen the joys and sorrows of the world, they are still pure and clear under the stars.

The Straight Story quotes

  • Danny Riordan, Clermont Resident: Well, you know, Alvin, there's a lot of hills bigger than Clairmont's between here and Zion. Even if you get that mower running again, it might still break down.

Alvin Straight: Well, you're a kind man talking to a stubborn man.

  • Alvin Straight: The worst part of being old is remembering when you was young.
