After reading the novel, review the movie again

"The Law of Cider House" can be regarded as an unpopular movie. It seems that the cast can definitely be judged by being strong, but don't forget that this is a movie from the last century. At that time Torbey Maguire hadn't put on Spider-Man's tights, and Richards Theron hadn't used his self-destructive image to prove that he was more than just a vase.
This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by John Owen (I have always disliked the self-righteous translation method of Hong Kong and Taiwan, just like translating "Shawshank's Redemption" into "stimulating 1995", so I don't think that "there is always a hot sun" is formal Translation). I watched the movie in the last century, and I admire that I was able to find such a movie at the time. I just read the novel. After reading the novel, I suddenly thought of watching the movie again.
Generally speaking, the film is relatively loyal to the original, which has a lot to do with the adaptation of the script by the author himself. I feel that John Owen is also a critical humorist. He always likes to use a ridiculous tone to tell facts that are actually not so pleasant. Due to the time of the movie or the audience, many stories about characters other than Homer have been deleted from the movie version. For example, Dr. Weber Lacy played by Michael Cain, when he was about to go to university, his negligent father suddenly wanted to spend money to hire prostitutes for him. So after the only jerky relationship, Lacy got gonorrhea, which is why he never married in his life. The tragic fate of the prostitute who infected Lacy and her daughter is also one of the main reasons why Lacy agrees that abortion is reasonable throughout his life. There is another main line of the story. Meloni, Homer's first love at the St. Claus Orphanage, does not appear in the film. We can't see how she made Homer's love for the first time, and then desperately chasing Homer for an unfulfilled promise-the "sunshine" in her heart.
The whole film has a slow rhythm, like a novel, hiding too much intense emotions under the calm scenes. When we finally get tired of too many explosions, roars, accusations, crazy kissing and brutal fighting, we may need a film with a peaceful mind.
Finally, there are actors. The choice of actors in this film is definitely the most commendable place. Eight years later, the popularity of Maguire and Theron has proved this point, and such a potential actor can be selected back then, which can be seen in the production. And the director’s insight. Of course, the star does not mean that you can play every movie well, but Maguire and Theron are also very good in this film. Young Maguire's white face, and the innocence and curiosity that appeared when he opened his eyes, alive and well is a true portrayal of Homer Wells. Theron from South Africa is lively in beauty, which fits Kandy's beautiful and innocent image. As for Kane, he is one of my favorite actors. He met the requirements of Dr. Lacy in the novel with little effort, being educated, kind, and sensitive.
After watching the movie and then writing a review, one afternoon passed. Looking at the sunshine outside the window, I suddenly felt that the name "There is always a scorching sun" also had a bit of flavor.

Not bad, I like the background music

How does The Cider House Rules translate to "there's always a sun"? Why does the name have to be translated into four characters... I still think the name Cider House Law is more interesting. Homer, Arthur, and Candy each had their own Rules, but they all came up with their own choices in the end. In 1999, Theron and Tobey Maguire were not yet famous. It can be seen that the director has a good eye for casting.

The Cider House Rules quotes

  • Homer Wells: [giving back an X-ray that Dr. Larch gave to him] I don't need this. I know about my condition.

Dr. Wilbur Larch: It's your heart. You ought to take it with you.

  • Fuzzy: I like orange. Should I keep the teeth orange?
