I used to think that surfing is the kind of thrilling extreme sport purely for fun, but after watching this film, I think I'm stupid enough to make a difference. Surfing is not even an extreme sport, but a whole life. When you are in a big wave, you have integrated into nature, you are not enslaved, but you are not above the waves. You can't fight these big waves.
From the plot point of view, there is nothing innovative in the film, all inspirational comedies should have. But there was a plot in the film that moved me in particular, that is, Big-Z showed Cody how to make his own surfboard. Big-Z is completely intoxicated. He loves surfing to the point of crazy, surfing is his life. Whenever I see someone intoxicated by something, I will be infected. It seems that I have also entered his world.
There are several characters with distinctive personalities in the film, such as the thin but conscientious bird in the film. Almost all the games on Pen Gu Island are managed by this bird alone. All the facilities of the 10th Big-Z Memorial Tournament in the film are arranged by this bird. I seem to see the complaints of the film authors against the bosses who exploited the laborers. It is worth noting that there is a persevering "surfing little bit". When Cody first came to the island, this little boy called for help in the water. Although he is young, his obsession with surfing is not necessarily that of Big-Z. In the preliminaries, the little guy held a board and rushed forward with the adults. At that time, I decided that he was Cody's successor. But he was much luckier than Cody, there were so many good people around him, and Cody was a poor man who had never seen his father. However, Cody has no shortage of paternal love. In Cody's mind, Big-Z is not only a hero, but also more or less the role of a father. Compared with Cody, the chicken Joe is even more pitiful. Joe's father was dismembered when Joe was still an egg and made fast food; for humans, this is cold humor. Chinese people often say that "children from poor families are in their homes early", so Joe looks mature and respectful. Although he sometimes feels stupid or even idiot, he has his own understanding of life. In the film, during Cody's time with Big-Z, Joe looked for Cody relentlessly in the "perilous" jungle. I believe this is a kind of loyalty to his friends.
Having said so many supporting roles, it's time to talk about the protagonist of the film-Cody+Big-Z. These two are like father and son, and to Cody, Big-Z is also a teacher and a friend. Cody learned the true meaning of surfing from Big-Z, and Big-Z found his true self because of this ignorant young man. The two of them (or the two penguins) represent the two main ideas of the film, the perseverance of bravely facing failure and the romantic tenderness of being sincere in life. Maybe my expression is not accurate enough, so let me quote two lines in the film, "never give up, find a way" and "Long, slow, smooth".
