My dream was to be a director. After finishing his studies at Lycée High School, Ulliel went to Saint-Denis University to major in drama. However, fate made him an actor. When Ulliel was 12 years old, he played a small role in the TV film "Une femme en blanc" (1997) (mini). Ulliel worked in television for the next few years, starring Nicolas Trajet in the 1999 short film Alias (13 minutes).
After playing a young shepherd bitten by a beast in "The Covenant of the Wolf Race-Brotherhood of the Wolf" (2001), he was excavated by the director Michel Blanc, and then starred in "Kiss the One You Want to Kiss" starring Charlotte Rampling. (Embrassez qui vous voudrez) (2002).
In 2003, Ulliel was spotted by director André Téchiné and appeared as Emmanuelle Béart's lover Jean Delgas in "Strayed" (2003).
Manech, who played in Un long dimanche de fiancailles (Un long dimanche de fiancailles) with Audrey Tautou in 2004, pushed Ulliel to the leading role. From 2003 to 2005, he was nominated as the best male newcomer three times in the "Caesar Award", the highest honor of French film known as the "French Oscar". In 2005, Ulliel finally won the Best Newcomer Award with "Long Engagement".
