At the beginning of the story, Robert and Luke were robbed in a convenience store. Luke was lucky enough to hide. Because of cowardice and fear, he did not dare to stand up and indirectly killed Robert. Luke fell into deep guilt.

Six months later, four classmates and friends met to go hiking in the wilderness and forest to mourn the late Robert. During the trip, Dom accidentally sprained his foot and the four decided to take a shortcut through the forest.

This forest is the mysterious black forest in Norse mythology and legend, and an evil fetish has caught sight of them. In the forest they met people who died tragically and were hung on trees. The four of them were also killed by the beasts one by one.

Luke and Dom escaped and met the aboriginals who thought they would escape the hunt, but the aboriginals tied them up and prepared a ceremony to pay homage to the beasts. One of the aboriginal people explained to Luke that this monster is a god they worship. He can extend people's lives, but the price is to stay in the forest and bow down to him and become his believer.

Seeing that his friend Dom was tortured to death by the monster, Luke’s pain was triggered by his guilt for Robert. Luke decided not to be cowardly anymore. He raised a gun and wounded the monster. The monster chased after him. Luke picked it up. The axe swung at the monster's head and took the opportunity to escape from the forest...

The film is relatively stable, calm, and the horror atmosphere is rendered in place. The forest is also beautiful and terrifying. The front is too plain, and only the fight with the monster in the back culminates. It is not so much a horror film as a drama.

The whole film revolved around Luke's regret for not being saved, and finally broke out on the monster to complete self-salvation. The atmosphere that can express the horror is a bit unsustainable, and the visual effect is still good, especially the scenery in the forest is not often seen. There is nothing special about this movie, you can watch it when you are bored.

The Ritual quotes

  • Luke: Why don't we go to... boom! Amsterdam?

Hutch: No, it's too touristy now, isn't it?

    Phil: All right, TripAdvisor.

Robert: I'm not getting off my head again.

    Dom: Tuscany?

    Phil: Yeah, good wines.

    Luke: No.

    Phil: Germany, then?

    Luke: Nein.

    Dom: Belgium?

Luke: Belgium? Mate, no one's ever been to Belgium by choice. What are you on about? What's in Belgium?

Dom: Beers that are, like, 42% or something.

  • Phil: [hiking in the rain] Oh, this is awful in almost every conceivable way.

Dom: There are some, Phil, who consider this character building.

Phil: Quite frankly, right now, Sweden can lick my bridge. Lick your what?

Dom: My bridge. Jesus Christ, the bridge.

Phil: Oh, you mean the perineum.

Dom: Yeah, the gooch. The bridge.
