Even the laughs cut to the bone

A story based on the director's childhood experience. Husband-a writer who is no longer popular, wife-a writer who is true to himself and gradually succeeds. The husband could not bear his own failure and the fact that his wife surpassed him, and their relationship could not be maintained. Two sons-the older Walt and the younger Frank, they will face the sudden changes in the family and the fact that they suddenly grow up to face the adult world.
Since the whole story comes from the director's own childhood experience, he is extremely sensitive and true to the feeling and capture of emotions, but he did not make it too personal. On the contrary, all emotions are reflected in the details. I like two details very much. One is that after Walt discovered that his father wanted to make out with the girl he liked in the room, he ran to the lake, and then came back and said to his mother: I dipped my head in the water. The other is that Frank wanted to take the cat back to Walt, but the cat broke away from everyone's arms and ran away.
The performances of Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, and Jesse Eisenberg can be said to be quite outstanding, especially Eisenberg. The growth process of the teenager is very wonderful. This is probably the feeling when Walt first saw the squid and the whale at the end of the film. .
The film's music (not really the theme music) is pink floyd's hey you, and this feels quite in place.
In general, I think this movie is worth watching. As far as this year’s Oscar is concerned, I think this one and "Good Night and Good Luck" are better than "Crash". I just watched "Crash" two days ago and I felt very disappointed. "Crash" just couldn't hold it.
ok, ok, digression, stop here.

The Squid and the Whale quotes

  • [first lines]

Frank Berkman: Mom and me versus you and Dad.

  • Bernard Berkman: Joan, let me ask you something. All that work I did at the end of our marriage, making dinners, cleaning up, being more attentive. It never was going to make a difference, was it? You were leaving no matter what...

Joan Berkman: You never made a dinner.

Bernard Berkman: I made burgers that time you had pneumonia.
