Review gentleman

There are unreasonable things in the newspapers every day. For example, I recently saw an article "Playing with Gentleman's Style", which explained what a gentleman is, saying that the current gentleman's style should be reflected in living in a villa and playing golf. I can't help but think of the joke: The emperor's Wowotou eye is smaller than ours. Even the advertisements for selling cars claim that a certain model has a gentleman's demeanor, so where is there a little bit of gentleman's shadow?

Therefore, I recommend an old film "Remains of the day" (Remains of the day), an old film of eleven years, which Hong Kong translates into "Farewell to You Love Day". I prefer Hong Kong's translation method, although "Long Days Are Ending" is much higher in the translation of "Long Days". I even want to change the title of the film to "Farewell With Love", in order to compare it with the contemporary "Like an Old Man Come", so the two titles even form a certain rhetorical beauty in Chinese.

Anthony Hopkins starred in "Farewell to the Love of Love" released in 1993. Many people were deeply impressed by his starring "The Silent Lamb" and "The Years of Love". He is good at acting quite introverted roles, so when he breaks out, for example, the scene where he suddenly shoots out at the last moment of "Burning Love", it can always give people a very shocking feeling.

And in "Farewell to Love Days", there is not a single outburst scene. In an atmosphere that can even be said to be dull, Hopkins took his restrained acting skills to the extreme and successfully created the image of an English gentleman. Stevens, the butler of the Darlington House, is always meticulous, silent and rigorous, doing his best to complete his daily work and strive for perfection.

Of course, there is also love. It is difficult to watch a film without love. The moving part of this film tells a love story that lasts for more than 30 years. The housekeeper played by Emma Thompson gradually ignited the emotional spark with Stevens in her daily work. After countless trivial and delicate incidents and skirmishes, the spark of love never ignited the raging fire. Stevens's almost instinctive high degree of self-control made the two miss a good relationship. And 30 years later, Stevens tried to make up for the mistakes of the year and went to the west coast of England to find a lover, but in the end there was no result. On a night of heavy rain, the two broke up at the station, knowing that there is no hope of seeing each other in this life, which is heartbreaking.

Throughout the film, Hopkins's role always hides his emotions behind impeccable actions and words. For viewers who are accustomed to chasing in the rain and kissing in the street, it may be in this kind of love that burns secretly like a fire on the ground. There is a fresh feeling in the story. Because of this, every line and every action of Hopkins in the film can be a tutorial for performing arts class.

After watching this film, you may have an understanding of the definition of a gentleman. The so-called gentleman, as Yongze said in "Norwegian Forest": "What you do is not what you want to do, but what you should do."

The Remains of the Day quotes

  • Miss Kenton: [about a new housemaid] You don't like having pretty girls on the staff, I've noticed.

    [teasing]

Miss Kenton: Might it be that our Mr Stevens fears distraction? Can it be that our Mr Stevens is flesh and blood after all and doesn't trust himself?

Stevens: [with the faintest trace of a smile] You know what I'm doing, Miss Kenton? I'm placing my thoughts elsewhere as you chatter away.

Miss Kenton: ...then why is that guilty smile still on your face?

Stevens: Oh it's not a guilty smile. I'm simply amused by the sheer nonsense you sometimes talk.

Miss Kenton: It *is* a guilty smile. You can hardly bear to look at her. That's why you didn't want to take her on, she's too pretty.

Stevens: Well, you must be right Miss Kenton, you always are.

  • Miss Kenton: I don't know what my future is. Ever since Katherine, my daughter, got married last year, my life has been empty. The years stretch before me and if only I knew how to fill them. But, I would like to be useful again.
