About the kids in the eighth grade

Very happy with the 13-year-old actors. When working with adults, you tell an adult actor where you are standing. The actor may ask: "Ah, how about my lighting? How about my makeup?" When working with a 13-year-old child, you tell them, "Go You spit on the palm of your hand!" They only ask: "Which hand?"

I hope the thirteen-year-olds in my story can speak like real thirteen-year-olds. In many movies nowadays, children's speech and expression skills are not like children, like an adult screenwriter. I want to make a movie. Children are like children, drinking milk and talking nonsense.

(In response to the phenomenon that creators are often out of touch with the characters they create, for example, male screenwriters write female characters, whites write black people-"... writing something not necessarily identify with...") Why did I think of writing one A story from the perspective of a 13-year-old girl? Because I really can’t say anything about myself, I don’t have much to say about everything about a 27-year-old male comedian. Yes, I am clearly aware that I am out of touch with the characters in my writing, and this is also Why do I want to tell the story of a 13-year-old child, because I don't want to tell myself anymore. Of course, there must be similarities between me and her. I can see myself through her, and anyone can see myself through others.

I don’t understand the 13-year-old children now. No one really understands what the current thirteen-year-old thinks. If you have to make a film that truly tells the thirteen-year-old, then you should let someone who is now thirteen-year-old come. Director, it's a pity that we won't let a 13-year-old child be a director.

If you look for an adult actor to play a minor, it feels different. Indeed, you have passed an age stage, you know what is going on at that age stage, and you can perform. But the problem is, if you are really at that age, at that age, you shouldn’t know what’s going on at this age, just like I’m in my age, I don’t know anything the fuck.

About the network

When I first started as a youtuber, the network was different from the current network. It was more of you making a happy video and then uploading it to the Internet. Now it is more complicated.

I don't want to judge whether the Internet is good or bad. I never have a very clear definition of the Internet, only a bunch of vague feelings. That's why I try to describe the Internet objectively and without judgment in this movie. I didn't say to design an ending for the hostess to throw the phone into the sea, and finally a happy smile appeared on her face. The reason is that I don't know how to evaluate it, I really don't know.

The current society seems to be speeding up, some of which are good things, faster transportation, more efficient labor, and so on. The same situation is put on the Internet, especially the online social mode. For example, you can talk to 10 people, and the Internet allows you to talk to 10,000 people. You can talk to 1 person for 1 hour. Now you can talk to 100 people in 5 minutes. God, but the question is why do we do that?

If you want to swear swearing on a TV show, you have to go to the US Congress to change the Federal Communications Commission's policy (Federal Communications Commission), but snapchat allows a bunch of children to spread child pornography to each other as much as they want. This world is pretty fucking. The solution I think of is to have more young people aware of these things, because we old people are far from knowing these things better than you. I believe that the emergence of more women in the field of science and technology will also help a lot.

In fact, there are a bunch of people on the Internet who behave like thirteen years old. I sometimes feel that our entire country is now in the eighth grade.

About success and life

What is success? Success is doing what you want to do for money. ("Doing what you love for money! ")

(The host mentioned the scene where the heroine gets up, puts on makeup and hair, goes back to bed and takes pictures, pretending to be awake) I don’t know, I really don’t know, it’s not that life doesn’t need an audience, everyone needs an audience , But, ah, I don’t know, that is, the self you show doesn’t need the affirmation of others. The self you live is not a performance, ah, I really don’t know, you know you have to accept it when you have In the interview, you have to pretend that you know, and then start talking nonsense, but I really don’t know, I don’t know.

Don't know don't know i don't know anything

A little thought:

After watching the movie, I have been looking for a word to evaluate my feelings. After watching the interview, I heard Bo said that he didn’t understand anything, so I tried to show a more objective reality (without judgement). I think it makes sense, this objective. Not to make people feel out of the way, but to feel a deeper truth. The movie didn’t want to criticize anything, say something bad or wrong, nor want to praise anything, to say how we should do it, but it’s telling a story, you watch it, you think, and when you’re finished, give yourself an explanation. ,Good.

Acne, weight, boys, plastic sisterhood, social media attention/no attention, college education, sexual curiosity... When growing up and encountering a lot of distress and embarrassment, this cute and brave girl went on to express her feelings on the screen, and laughed one by one. "Gucci" cheer up himself in every time and space, and welcome the next step in life. Compared with warm sugar boiled water tablets or self-willing and depraved painful growth, it seems to inject more real/hopeful energy into youth growth films. Looking forward to Bo Burnham's sparkling next time!

On what to do if the girl star is long split and the youth film is too realistic and not good

Eighth Grade quotes

  • Kayla: But it's like, being yourself is, like, not changing yourself to impress someone else.

  • Mark Day: You're wrong. If you grow up to have a daughter like you, she will make you so so happy. Being your dad makes me so happy, Kayla. You don't know; you don't know how happy you make me. It's beyond... I can't describe it. It's so easy to love you. It's so easy to... to be proud of you. I'm not just saying this. I swear to God, I'm not just saying this. Sure, sometimes if I see you're upset or having a rough day, then I feel sad. But that kind of being sad, that sort of day-to-day sad, or worrying that I do, that's not... Kayla, always beneath all that, I am always so unbelievably happy that I get to be your dad.
