The rest of life

This is the drama review I posted on my Weibo.

Recently Amazon produced a sci-fi drama Upload "Upload Newborn". Some commented that it was a comedy version of "Black Mirror", so I couldn't wait to find it. There are only 10 episodes in the first season of this drama, which is less than half an hour, plus the appearance of the male and female protagonists are online, and I don’t feel tired after watching it in one sitting. However, it is still a long way from the original "Black Mirror".

"Uploading Freshmen" is about people who can upload their memories to a virtual world after death, and maintain communication with people in the real world through VR.

The original theme of "Black Mirror" was very clear, reflecting on the impact of technology on mankind. On the one hand, scientific and technological progress has made life more and more convenient, and on the other hand, it has also made people lose sex. But "Uploading Freshman" oscillates between a commercial murder idol drama that joins a love story and a science fiction drama that reflects on the influence of technology. Many viewers focused their attention on the murder of the male protagonist and the role his girlfriend played in it. To be honest, such old-fashioned stories can only be used to pass the time.

"Uploading Freshman" is not so mediocre, at least it has not given up on reflecting on the impact of technology on mankind. Through some details, it also reminds everyone to think about the meaning of uploading the memories of the dead to the virtual world, and a series of moral issues that may be caused.

According to the description of "Uploading Newborns", people upload their memories to the server after death, and they can continue to live in the virtual world. In order to enjoy this service, they must pay the operators of the virtual world for their food and drink in the virtual world. For fun, various value-added services need to be paid. However, after death, their property management and control rights are not in their own hands. What kind of life they can live in the virtual world depends entirely on their relatives or agents who have real property control rights in the real world. Their relatives in the real world can choose to delete them from the virtual world or temporarily freeze them at any time according to their financial resources or mood. In the play, the protagonist has been threatened by his girlfriend. In a sense, they are dolls of people who live in the real world.

The virtual world after death is equally diverse, with top rich people, computer geniuses like male protagonists, and poor people. They have nothing to do, their main activities are all kinds of entertainment, as well as communicating and interacting with relatives living in the real world through VR. Some of them, such as geniuses like male protagonists, can also engage in creative activities in the virtual world and continue to program and write codes. Through the server connection, it can even affect the real world. For the rest of my life, whether to be a doll with peace of mind or to do something worthwhile (although it may be deleted by the real-world controller at any time), this is a question.

In the play, there is a little boy who has passed away for 6 years. In the virtual world, his appearance and mind remain the same. He has always been a child. His friends and brothers who used to live in real life have grown up, and they don't want to be with a young child anymore. The little boy can only endure endless loneliness in the virtual world. Is this fair? Can people grow or live as they wish for the rest of their lives?

In addition, in the play, the virtual world after death is also hierarchical, and the deceased who pays a large amount of service fees live in the upper class of the virtual world. People who can barely afford to enter the virtual world can only live on the 2G layer, where the virtual environment is considered the lowest standard of survival in the real world. If the 2G data is used up, it will be frozen, and you need to recharge or wait until next month to resurrect. In the 2G space, all basic leisure activities require additional fees. Books can only be viewed for 5 pages for free, and it will cost money to read them. Therefore, people not only need to fight for real life, but also have to work hard to earn money for the rest of their lives.

Just a few days ago, Musk said in an interview that the brain-computer interface will be implanted in the human brain within one year. Perhaps, in our lifetime, we really need to think about how to spend the rest of our life after death.
