metaphor one: fauns PAN and its maze of
"Pan's labyrinth, "formerly known as" El Laberinto del Fauno ". I am here to give this Spanish text of the original name, of course, there is the intention
according to the meaning of Spanish, FAUNO ancient Rome bariaur of fauns, and PAN He was the peasant god of half-man sheep in ancient Greece. Although all half-man sheep, all
It is a farmer, but there is still a big difference between FAUNO and PAN! (FAUNO) Paine is the son of the god Hermes, half man and half beast. And PAN is actually the son of the surviving Saturnian Cronos.
According to the investigation by the limited information available, FAUNO is relatively friendly, which is in charge of agriculture and animal husbandry, image is more similar to deer and antelope or a combination of people, but also warm temperament
and while the PAN Although he is God, animal husbandry, agriculture, but good sex, fulfill the lust, the image is a combination of goat and human, in western mythology, but there is a PAN is a hoax
symbolic argument (if this is so, we can understand it said in a self-introduction that he is the reason FAUNO of the.) .
of course, we do not look at religion-based film is unable to understand the meaning of this layer. the English translation has to be translated into FAUNO PAN.
we look at a Chinese translation of the English version, which is even more incomprehensible of the esoteric.
so, with the original title, we have to admit is not appearing in the maze is FAUNO? in fact, where the director played a little trick. root
According to ancient Greek mythology depicted, PAN live in the maze (labyrinth) centers. the relevant FAUNO but did not like to say. so, I think the
film appeared or PAN. the director of the title, is a combination of symbolic PAN (fraud) of small metaphor. If you look at it this way, "The Labyrinth
of the Faun" is indeed more ironic than "The Labyrinth of the PAN".
It is worth mentioning that the labyrinth in the film also has a special meaning! (- -This is the language cultural differences ah!) in Western culture
in, labyrinth maze pattern of concentric circles refers to the shape of only one entrance and exit. It can often be seen in the backyard of a Catholic church. The meaning is that every
The individual soul must pass the track, and can only move forward in the tortuous life, there is no retreat. Once selected into the Labyrinth, was focused on the idea
can come to the center point, and also prove that you find the deepest of his soul.
Therefore, we can also think that what little Ophelia heard in the center of the maze is actually the voice from the deepest part of her soul.
Such words with complex religious meanings, once translated into a labyrinth, although there is a sense of mystery, but their connotations are greatly discounted.
So, under the assumption of Pan God's existence, is the PAN in the film good or bad? Maybe: "Pan God
will confuse people but is not its role to confuse people lead the way."
Metaphor II: Ophelia
heroine Ofelia (Ophelia) the name, the idea comes from the eponymous character of Shakespeare's famous play "Hamlet" in order to imply that the tragic fate of the characters. Ofelia is a poor person in Shakespeare's play, she was so pure and kind, so carefree. However, when she stepped into the threshold of youth, the gorgeous flower of life gradually withered. She is attached and obedient. The needs of others are her own needs. In the opposing world between her father and her lover, she has lost her way. Lovers hate her and spit on her. Father and brothers don't understand her and complain about her. Her life has no content. In the end, she was all dressed up and drowned herself in a stream full of flowers.
Metaphor of the three: the toad habitat trees
first task of Ophelia, take the key hole of old trees. If you look closely, the shape is actually exactly the same as Pan Shen's head (including the halo).
Metaphor 4:
The second mission of pale man Ophelia is to steal a dagger in the bloody feast hall where monsters rest. If you carefully enough, you can find a bloody feast hall
in the mural, it is an imitation of the Spanish painter Goya (Goya) famous anti-war works of darkness meaning of "Saturn Devouring One of
his Children. Here's Saturn refers to the Roman god of agriculture of Satunusi, the ancient Greek legend
, he also called the Kronos (Cronos) (as learned from the prophecy he would like to be his father Zeus as children usurper, so long as their
child is born will eat, this is the picture content.). And PAN is actually the son of the surviving Saturnian Cronos.
Let's connect this to metaphor three! The old tree that resembles the head of God Pan may not be like God Pan, but like Kronos. Combined maze and spiritual
soul of metaphor, PAN let Ophelia Ophelia tasks and revolt against the father will be able to link up.
The prototype of this monster called pale man is Lamia in ancient Greek legend.
Lamia was originally favored by Zeus, but Hera (Zeus's wife) was jealous of her, so she cast a spell on her so that she would eat it every time she gave birth to a child.
Under this cruel torture, Lamia became insane and turned into a savage monster, sheltering in caves and secret rooms, and hunting children.
Hera still refused to let Lamia go, casting spells to prevent her from sleeping. Zeus couldn't bear it, so he cast a spell to let her take off her eyes freely.
Therefore, when Lamia took off her eyeballs, the children were safe; once they were put back, she started hunting the children again.
In the "historical age", the locals in Greece often used Lamia to scare disobedient children: "If you don't be obedient, Lamia will come and eat you!"-Excerpted from "Devils", but Hera still Unwilling to let Lamia go, cast a spell to prevent her from sleeping. Zeus couldn't bear it, so he cast a spell to let her take off her eyes freely. Therefore, when Lamia took off her eyeballs, the children were safe; once they were put back, she started hunting the children again.
Pale man and Lamia are surprisingly similar except for their gender and appearance (Lamia is a half-human snake).
And Lamia has other descendants called Lamiae. These descendants are half-human, half-snake blood-sucking monsters, four-legged,
The front feet are claws and the hind feet are hoofs. People who are bitten by Lamiayi can only be cured with Lamia's roar. There are also some legends that Ramiayi is a half-goat and half-horse monster.
These monsters may also have the habit of eating children and sleeping by removing their eyeballs. The inspiration for the film’s original staff should come from this.
Five of metaphor: the left lock
the second task Ophelia's another interesting place, she did not follow the instructions of the wizard, choose a lock on the left. So,
is the wizard's instructions wrong? I don't think so.
Ophelia completed the first task through PAN's instructions, which shows that PAN's instructions are not wrong. The second task, although there is no clear PAN
tell her bloody feast in with what kind of danger (which contains the essence of the PAN confusing), but it also reminded her, do not touch any of the stuff
. Therefore, Ophelia's choice is entirely out of her own wishes!
Before the second task, the maid Mosidis said to Ophelia, "My mother once told me to be careful of the Faun". Ophelia for Mo
CTS great confidence, so she chose to lock the left of the spirit rather than the meaning, is the PAN has had doubts.
And Ophelia's choice is on the left, pay attention! It's on the left. Combined with historical background of view - in France, she called the Jacobins, in Russia, she called Bu
Ershen Vick in "Pan's Labyrinth," she told the guerrillas (that is, the maid stood Mosey diss Over there).
This scene really filled his popularity ah, the Prophet pointed out long ago a middle road, but the passionate revolutionaries did not listen, they prefer to
use a sword, with fire, with their youthful passion open up a road to heaven. This is why she took out a dagger. I guess
... if she chooses another lock, she will get something completely different. And the choice of lock on the left, to a certain extent, has
decided her fate.
Metaphor Six: Two Grapes
We can see! Before Ophelia took out the dagger, she was not tempted by food! And when she took out the dagger contravention of instructions, the table
of food for her had a strong temptation.
First of all, grapes were very expensive fruits in ancient Europe, and only nobles could eat them! And in Western cultures, grapes and apples was
often likened to temptation. In many novels and movies, people die because of the temptation of grapes!
Secondly, the grape is associated with Pan God in the legend, implying the death of Yanmen.
Connect these hints to the fifth metaphor. We can see a cause and effect relationship as follows:
Ophelia because God's instructions (to open the lock on the left), and thus fall into the trap of temptation (to be tempted grapes) did not listen, and was in the trap
of desire prisoner (to eat Two grapes).
This implies that no matter which side of the war is on, people cannot avoid temptation. Ophelia self-righteous choices led to her fall into the temptation of tragedy
and the fate of death.
Seven metaphor: Mandela grass and Ophelia's brother
mandrake
mandrake (Atropa Mandragora), Solanaceae Mandragora genus. Origin: Europe. Also known as poisonous eggplant, sunflower or poisonous apple. Widely distributed in southern Europe, North Africa and the Arab regions. The leaves are dark green, 20-40 cm long, with small yellow-green or purple-red bell-shaped flowers and ovoid-shaped fruits. Its roots are human-shaped, male or female, and some people say sarcastically: more Like carrots or parsnips. John Sibthorp (John Sibthorp, 1758 ~ 1796), James Edward Smith (James Edward Smith, 1759 ~ 1828), from 1806 ~ 1840 "Flora Graeca".
Because it looks like a person, most Europeans in ancient times believed that mandela grass can aphrodisiac. According to some legends, a female elephant went crazy looking for the male elephant after eating the mandela grass. In early ancient Europe, people often used the semen of a man who was about to be executed for watering, because they firmly believed that it could make aphrodisiac more powerful.
Mandela grass is a plant (Solanum sylvestris) that grows in southern Europe. It has yellow-green flowers and branched roots. This plant was once considered to have magical powers because its roots and human bodies resemble the
mandela grass, which is a symbolic plant of Eurasia. Its forked roots, especially after being properly modified, implied a human form, which is a precious gift even in the early modern times.
The roots of mandela grass resemble a human shape. This external feature implies its medicinal properties. In fact, mandela grass does contain a lot of toxic phantom ingredients, and therefore it has become the main ingredient of wizards to make potions. In the traditional Hebrew culture, mandela grass symbolizes fertility and reproduction, and eating it helps pregnancy.
Traditional symbolism believes that the external characteristics of plants imply its medicinal properties and applications. Mandela grass is regarded as a panacea because of its magical "perfect human" characteristics. In fact, this eggplant plant contains a lot of toxic hallucinogens (including hydrastine, atropine and scopolamine). Therefore, it has become an important ingredient in the preparation of ointment by wizards and has gradually become a symbol of various witchcraft. According to legend, the mandela grass grows under the gallows, nourished by the semen of the hanged man, and requires extreme care to dig it from the ground. It is said that when this plant is pulled out by the roots, it will make blood clotting and lethal crying. The dog that died during the excavation was used to harvest its roots.

Numerous legends show that it is both seen and daunting. In ancient Greek mythology, it is a symbol of the female magician gurgling. For Jews, it is a good way to promote pregnancy.
In short, the mandela grass symbolizes the power that humans must be very cautious to approach.
Mandela, the most frightening plant in herbalism. Flower language: horror. According to a legend, the mandela grass has an evil life, and the seeds are created by people who have died underground, and the purpose is to murder and other dirty purposes.
Uses:
1. Mandrake has a strong anesthetic effect and is used as an analgesic or surgical anesthetic. It also seems to be well-known as a powerful aphrodisiac. In the Middle Ages, its roots were dried and used as amulets or as amulets for fertility. There are also many superstitious claims about collecting mandela, probably because the seller is thinking about raising prices. One theory is that when mandela is unearthed, the roots will scream, and the people who hear the screams Will be killed on the spot.
2. Mandela grass is a poisonous herb. Use the leaves to make tea. After drinking, you will be excited first, and then become mentally slow. Aristotle talked in his book "Sleep" that the poisonous eggplant can play a role in causing sleep. In the Middle Ages, people used its leaves to make tea, which has a calming and hypnotic effect.

The collection process is like this: On a dark, dark and windy night, the picker first faces west and covers his ears with wax. After finding the mandela grass, the picker chanted the spell while pointing at the grass with the tip of the sword, and surrounded the mandela grass 3 times, and must not touch it, and then brought the dog and Mandela The grass is connected with a rope. The rope should be tied tightly. The dog has to go on a hunger strike for three days. At this time, food is thrown in front of the dog. At this time, the dog runs forward and drags the roots out of the earth. The roots will scream at this time. The dog fell to the ground. Then the picker can pick the mandela grass.
It is also mentioned in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets": it is a powerful restorative. It can be used to restore people who have been deformed or enchanted to their original state. It is also an important ingredient in most antidote. But it is also very dangerous, because once the young mandela grass grows moody, people will faint when they hear its cry, and even die by blood clotting, and the acne can be healed and transplanted. They will hold a dance party before they mature, and when they want to be transplanted to someone else's flower pot, it means that they are fully mature.
While cutting the wheat, Reuben went to the field to find the mandarin and brought it to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandarins." Leah said, "Is it a trivial matter that you took my husband? Are you going to take my son's mandarins again?" Rachel Said: "For your son's mandarin, he can sleep with you tonight." When Jacob came back from the field in the evening, Leah came out to meet him and said, "You want to sleep with me, because I really use me. Your son's mandarin hired you." Jacob slept with her that night. God agreed to Leah, she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son.
——Mandarin
in the text of "Old Testament: Genesis" refers to the mandela grass.
Mandrake, the Latin name Atropa Mandrago, is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Solanaceae Datura with a strong anesthetic effect. From the beginning of the Bible to the love and sex in the modern hippie movement, mandela grass has a close connection with our magical world. Remember the ugly-looking baby crying harshly after the mandela grass was pulled out in "Harry Potter"? Hearing that kind of crying can also cause some damage to your body. In fact, the roots of mandela grass do have a human shape, which adds mystery to its medicinal use, and it was widely used by warlocks and wizards long before the Middle Ages. Legend has it that the mandala grown under the gallows is the most effective because they are watered with the semen of a dying man.
Mandela grass contains a variety of toxic hallucinogens, of which 3 alkaloids are the most effective. Since ancient times, various parts of mandela grass have been used by wizards and priests as ingredients for psychic medicine. But it is more widely used as an aphrodisiac, and is sometimes used for anesthesia and pain relief.
Mandrake is just one of the many magical plants in the genus Datura. I will continue to sort out the rest of the plant information and put it here.
"The screams like Mandela pierced the sky, and everyone who was alive was shaken mad."-This is what Juliet said.

Ophelia's younger brother can be seen as a symbol of ultimate rule and power. Film, Ophelia (idealism) wanted him to do his own kingdom's
prince, Captain (real fascism) wanted him to become his successor, and the last is the embrace of his guerrillas (Revolutionary Left Party).
Let us look back and Ophelia's brother Mandela grass grow together, nurturing blood and milk grew up with this metaphor of all official statistical
metaphor of eight: Mosey Judith
Moshi diss this People on the left have a major influence on Ophelia! Mosey Diskin's words and deeds, even比奥菲利亚mother to her
greater impact. For example, Ophelia told Mosidis alone about seeing PAN. Mosey diss careful pastoral word of God so that Austrian

In the end, Mosidis was unable to rescue Ophelia. Ophelia is dead ...... left her confused represented a symbol of the ruling power of the Austrian
philia brother hold in their hands. In fact, the director here is ironic about the left, and he also implicitly expressed his political position.
Nine metaphor: the other hand
I think it should be very few people remember such an insignificant little fragments. In the beginning of the film, when the team arrived at the camp, Ophelia right hand holding the child
, then book gingerly out his left hand to shake hands with the captain. As a fascist officer, the captain stretched out his right hand, grabbed her left hand, and said coldly: "
it's the other hand, Ofelia" (it's the other hand, Ofelia). Combining the above eight metaphors, it is not difficult for us to find!
The small handshake on the face also implies Ophelia's leftist choice. And as captain of the fascist right-wing, also confessed his stand

Some analysis of the plot, monsters, creative inspiration and metaphors of "Pan’s Labyrinth"
1. The scene where Colonel Vidal was cut his mouth by Mercedes was derived from a tradition called chelsea smile, which was treated by the British in the past When a traitor is a traitor, he will use a knife to slash the enemy's mouth into a smile half-parted on both sides to express punishment.
2. The name of the heroine Ofelia (Ophelia) is conceived from the character of the same name in Shakespeare's famous play "Hamlet" to imply the character's tragic fate.
3. When Ofelia and the colonel met for the first time, because holding a book in his right hand, he could only shake hands with the colonel with his left hand. The colonel severely criticized: It's the other hand, Ofelia. This scene is exactly the same as the scene in the second chapter of Dickens' novel "David Copperfield" when the protagonist first met his stepfather.
4. The creative concept of "Pan's Labyrinth" was deeply influenced by two fairy tale masters. One is the well-known Hans Christian Anderson. A wonderful imitation of "Little Match Girl") The other is Wilde (advocating art for the sake of art, his fairy tales are all interpretations of "heart breaking and death")
5. The movie has a guiding effect on the bizarre imagination of this movie There are two more books, <
6. Director Gilmore Del Toro seems to like to show the death of children very much. The scene of killing
7. The old tree where the toad inhabits, if you look closely, the shape is actually exactly the same as Pan Shen's head (including the halo)
8. The pale man and Pan Shen faun are actually the same person (the player is also the same person), pale Man can be said to be God Pan’s test of Ophelia. If you look closely, the two elves (red and blue) eaten by that monster came alive again at the end of the film~~~
9. pale man The hall of the feast of blood actually alludes to Colonel Vidal’s exaggeration. Carefully look at the feast scene of the two people. The composition of the picture is the same.
10. The murals in the hall of pale man are inspired by the Spanish painter Goya. Dark works<
11.According to the more popular archetypes (non-Jungian archetypes) in recent literary criticism and film and television reviews, this film also has several such archetypes: Philia-Chastity, Mother of Virgin Ophelia-Mother Mosidis-Mother, Wisdom Woman
Talk about Colonel:
In fact, Colonel Vidal is a more tragic character than the protagonist in the movie. He is in Spain under the Franco dictatorship had the noble status of an officer colonel. Perhaps he was born to serve the war. The only relic left by his father was a pocket watch, in order to let future generations remember his father's war. The time to die on the battlefield...I have accepted this kind of thoughtful vidal since I was a child, and hoped to change but was unable to change this situation. He said that he hoped that his child would be born in a bright and pure Spain. He once concealed the facts of his pocket watch in public. It shows that the colonel’s subconscious self-hatred. He is a victim of the times. He killed people under the instigation of doctrine and dictatorship. He wanted to resist, but he was unable to fight his fate. Kierkegaard once said: "The tyrant is dead, and he rules too. It's over; the martyr is dead, and his reign has just begun." Compare the deaths of the Colonel and Ophelia: Although one died, the soul was redeemed and became eternal. The other only got the sentence "Your child connects you" before death. I don’t even know the name of "It’s dead, nothing, and absurdly ending a brutal life. In contrast, the colonel is even more sad.
As for the three tasks that Pan God arranged for Ophelia, they are actually right Whether she dares to resist, whether she dares to challenge the test when she realizes that she is wrong. In the hall of the pale man, Leo Filia stole the grapes, and in the final ceremony, she refused to hand over her younger brother and resisted many times. Pan Shen has repeatedly embodied this spirit: resistance, rebellion, and fearless struggle. This spirit is what the colonel desires but is out of reach.
About the soundtrack:
The Spanish soundtrack Javier Navarrete, who has a musical background halfway through his career, was invited by the director to write concert works, which made people more curious about
his musical taste. He once described in an interview that the influence of American minimalist musicians on him Very deep, and he also prefers European electronic music, such as the works of Brain Eno. "Pan’s Labyrinth"
is his second collaboration with director Guillermo Del Toro. The previous collaboration between the two was "El Espinazo del diablo".
Most of Javier’s film music was made by a native Spanish director. Therefore, Javier's reputation cannot be heard by the world like his Spanish fellow Alberto Iglesias.
There are roughly four themes in the whole work, each of which is as beautiful as a song. The first lullaby theme "Long, Long Time Ago" runs through the whole work. When the film opens, the
children sing this When it came to the theme, I made up my mind to find this original soundtrack. Closely linked to the theme of the film, the lullaby gives people the feeling that there is only one word "innocent",
innocent, innocent, and with a vague sadness. The film adopts the inverted method, and Ofelia on the screen opens her eyes, heavy breathing and The bloodstain, the hint of a lullaby, makes people feel sympathetic.
Javier Navarrete developed the lullaby theme to the fullest. It is full of grief in "Funeral" and "Ofelia". It
appears in the final scene of Ofelia's mother's dystocia and little Ofelia, representing a tragic fate; "Rose, Dragon", "Princess" In it, played with a victorious brass pipe,
it shows that Ofelia's kindness and innocence has finally passed the trial and reached the other side of the light.
The captain's theme, which symbolizes the dictator, sounded after the marching snare drum. Javier Navarrete said that he used the chords drawn on the cello to suggest the dark personality of the captain.
When the little Ofelia was telling a story for her younger brother, the scene turned over and fell on the captain who was repairing the pocket watch. At this time, the captain's theme appeared like fate, and he also deliberately arranged the
story. Later, the captain asked everyone to tell Who is the father of his child, this piece of music also appeared. The arrangement of this music reminds me of the fatalistic theme in "Carmen".
In addition, the waltz, which is both comforting and lamenting, officially added fuel to this cruel but enlightening story after the album 1/2; the theme of Galicia folk style is
also in the trial given by the Faun Appearing, providing a suitable background for fairy tales and legends. In addition to the three themes, there are the dark vocal motives that symbolize the labyrinth of Faun, and the inharmonious sound of string music,
representing heinous atrocities, and the structure is quite neat.
The violin solo in Track 4 "The Fairy and the Labyrinth" is extremely charming. In the video, it is matched with Ofelia’s step-by-step process of discovering the labyrinth under the guidance of the wizard.
I want to say that this audio-visual combination is really classic. Everyone has goosebumps. Javier Navarrete seems to have deliberately separated reality and fairy tales through music. When the story of fairy tales progresses, the
fantasy is full of wind and beauty.
With the development of the plot, the music is getting darker and more and more discordant. A piece of action-style music that I like very much appears in the 11th track "Not Human". The
composer uses the rhythm of the heartbeat to beat the drums to create tension. Atmosphere, the 18th track "Pan and The Full Moon" is almost at the end of the story, and the horrible and dark sound effects have reached a climax.
Many negative comments on this original soundtrack are also due to these dark clips with "Lord of the Rings" movies. The shadow of music, and think it lacks creativity.
Track 16 "Funeral" tells of Ofelia’s mother’s dystocia. The second half of the orchestra is just like the heavy footsteps of the funeral procession, but there is also peace after suffering sublimated.
The orchestration and rhythm are a bit like the first movement of a symphony; the second half of the 17th track "Mercedes" describes the victory of the guerrillas. In a triple rhythm,
a triumphant brass tube appears. Justice began to fight back against tyranny, smelling the gunpowder of victory in the music.
Judging from the movie-watching experience, the ratio of this film with music is quite high. The soundtrack album contains more than 70 minutes of full music, and there are also audio tracks that have not been included in the movie.
Javier Navarrete’s effort can be seen. The degree to which music is involved in movies, and the music carefully arranged in accordance with metaphors, has a slight concept of drama music, and it is
a work that people who like orchestral style soundtracks should not miss.
Film music critics have contradictory feelings about "Pan's Labyrinth". Music from the Movies gave this work 5 stars and praised the music as beautiful,
but Movie-wave believed that there are a lot of excellent masterpieces in the same category, and it is difficult to give a high evaluation to "Pan's Labyrinth". In any case, for me,
listening to this original soundtrack has too many surprises and enjoyments. I am very excited that it can be nominated for the Oscar Film Music Awards, making the outstanding musician Javier Navarrete
one of the music focuses of Hollywood instead of continuing. Buried in the corner of the sea.
Javier Navarette, Label: Milan Entertainment, Producer: Emmanuel Chamboredon Ian P. Hierons.
Basically all music is composed of human humming, strings, piano and percussion that can create mystery. The overall feeling is mysterious, sad, low,
choked but no tears.
