Episode 5 Metalhead

This episode is undoubtedly the most alternative in the current Black Mirror series, and the length is also the shortest 41 minutes. The way of expression and the story are a bit experimental.

Very little dialogue. Deliberately created a roughly vague post-modern atmosphere through limited dialogue, and only selected a small fragment of this era to show: the son of the heroine Bella sister (that is, the nephew) is dying, although nothing Can save him, but Bella wants to find an item that can comfort his nephew to make him happy. When looking for this item in the warehouse, the electronic dog was triggered, and his companion was killed on the spot, and he was chased and killed by the electronic dog all the way to escape. Later, although she succeeded in killing the electronic dog chasing her, she still hit the opponent's tracker shot. Before attracting other electronic dogs, Bella cut her throat and killed herself. (In fact, it seems that 41 minutes is enough to talk about such things. At this time, I have to applaud Maxine Peake, who plays Bella. In many cases, actors have no lines at all, and only use body language and expressions to convey the desire to survive and the last Despair.)

Black and white colors. From the "eyes" of the electronic dog, the world is black and white and gray. It implies that the world is now'controlled' by them. There are 2 possible interpretations here. 1) The world has been controlled by mechanical intelligence, and humans have been driven to a certain place to survive. Once humans cross the boundaries, mechanical intelligence arranges electronic dogs to chase and kill humans. 2) Mechanical intelligence is used by a certain group as a weapon of war. In this territory, as long as there is an'enemy' human beings stepping into it, they will be killed. At the beginning of the story, there is a dialogue about pigs. The male partner said that he could not imagine living in a society where the sight range of pigs is undignified by other pigs' assholes, while the female protagonist Bella said that this society may be considered equal (?). The source of this passage is from George Orwell's book "Animal Farm" (which is a political fable about a group of pigs making revolution for equality). Therefore, the story is more inclined to the second possibility. The words of the heroine imply that the current society is unequal and centralized, which means that a certain interest group rules the world. Because in my opinion, robots don’t need to rule the world. They don’t need to reproduce offspring to continue tribal life, and they can’t talk about grabbing natural resources to develop industrial wealth. They are at best to prevent humans from destroying themselves, in short. Just to prevent you from killing me, I will kill you first.

Finally, talk about the object used to comfort humans, a teddy bear. My understanding is that this bear represents the tender memories of human society in the past, and it symbolizes the warm, humane, free, and worry-free state of existence when it was not pursued by mechanical intelligence in the past, compared to the indifferent, cruel, and icy state of existence at this moment. living environment. But I have to say that the selection of this symbol was a bit of a failure. There are many possibilities for the same comforting items: a photo, a video, and even candy eaten by the heroine. Why must we risk our lives for this bear with 2 companions? The last props used to point the question make people unable to empathize, but question the meaning of the whole story.

In fact, I like this fragmentary expression, which provides a perspective but brings an immersive experience. Just watching a fragment of the story is the most immersive episode of Black Mirror so far.

  • Robert Daly: I'm coming to get you!

  • Robert Daly: [Furiously patching through to Walton, who is fixing the engine manually from the jet fader] Walton, you're going to pay for this.

    Walton: Robert, listen.

Robert Daly: I'm going to bring Tommy back in.

    Walton: Hey, Robert, listen...

Robert Daly: God so help me, you are going to regret all of this SO HARD!

Walton: Bob, I wanna talk to you here! I was thinking i should say... sorry.

    Robert Daly: [Beat] Go on.

Walton: [Breathlessly as he fixes the engine] You created Infinity. You're a fucking genius. I exploited that. I treated you like the golden goose and I got fat off the profits, figuratively speaking. And I was thinking, I should have appreciated you more, you know? I should have treated you better. Yeah, yeah I was thinking I should say all that.

    [Beat]

Walton: But then you threw my son out of an airlock, so... FUCK YOU TO DEATH.

[Activates the engine which incinerates him]
