The secret of an Iranian girl

Iranian films always make people happy and their standards are always high. I have always had high expectations for films from Iran. Nevertheless, this "About Yili" (also known as "Ellie's Little Secret", "That Day on the Beach") still amazes me. The biggest feature of this film is the modernity of its subject matter and the openness of the story.
There was a time when I was very fascinated by Iranian movies. From "Little Shoes" to "Drunken Horse Moment", I looked and watched all the Iranian movies I could find. Iranian films have given me a perfect impression. The theme and subject matter of the film, the style and expression of the film, have also modeled my perception of Iranian films, thinking that Iranian films have their own unique style. The Iran in these movies is a traditional Iran rooted in its cultural soil. In the movie, we can see the simplicity of the Iranians and the hardships of their lives. We can also feel their sadness and optimism from the emotions that flow slowly in the movie. These films have left a deep Iranian brand with a strong Iranian flavor.
"About Yili" shows us a different Iran. This is a modern Iran. The characters in the movie are a group of educated middle-class Iranians with good careers. They drove to the beach and enjoyed their leisure time on vacation. This is very different from the subject matter of Iranian films in the past, and it is full of modernity. The tradition and religion that used to play the leading role in Iranian films retreat from the background of the film. In the past, the protagonists were mostly children or people in closed villages. Now they give way to the middle class in the city. The slow and unchanging rural life has also changed. Become a dynamic city life. The lives of the characters in the movie are no different from the lives of the middle class in most cities in the world today. This is the modernity of its subject matter. The story of the film "About Yili" is also very open. From the beginning of the film, the audience wondered how the director would tell the story and what direction he would choose. Halfway through the movie, Yili's fate began to attract the audience, and the filming became a little suspenseful. As the story progresses, the life and death of Yili is no longer what the audience wants to know most, and her life experience has become the biggest doubt. Who is she? What kind of story is behind her? However, until the end, the film did not give a fixed answer, everything can only be experienced by the audience. This kind of story is quite open, and the unanswered questions leave more people to think about, and it also makes the film itself more watchable.
Although "About Yili" has many similarities from the core of the story to its external form with the mainstream films of the world, it also has its own uniqueness, which determines the film's Iranian ancestry. This uniqueness lies in the beautiful and mysterious Iranian girl Yili. Yili is not the protagonist in the movie, but everything in the movie revolves around her. Yili has the kind of beauty of an Iranian girl, and she is really tempting when she is young. She is full of charm and mystery. Yili is just her nickname, no one knows her real name. Everything about her comes from other people's narratives, and only God knows whether it is true. This is a mysterious girl, such a girl can be found in all forms of society, but Yili's body has distinct Iranian characteristics. From the narration of the characters in the story, we can know that Yili is a kindergarten teacher. She has a fiance, but she is not satisfied with it. She seldom speaks, and it is difficult for us to know her inner thoughts and what secrets she hides in her heart. Did she know that this trip to the seaside was actually for her blind date? This is also the most important part of the film, and is the key to determining whether Yili is dead. In other cultures, it may be just an immoral behavior to have a fiancé to go on a blind date, but in Iranian Muslim values, what Yili bears is a crime. This is a sin she cannot bear. From this point, we can clearly see the Iranian characteristics of the film.
Maybe she came with an illusion, but when things became clear, she felt scared. She thought of leaving as soon as possible, and after it was difficult to achieve, death was her best choice. It doesn't matter whether she died because of saving someone or she chose to commit suicide. Before she disappeared bizarrely, the movie showed her joyful expression when flying a kite in close-up. In reality, she cannot fly freely like a kite, and calm has gone away from her. Then only death can wash her off her guilt. In order to get the freedom she hopes for. "A painful ending is better than the pain without ending." She ended all the pain with death, but failed to wash away her shame. As she left, all her secrets were sealed in the sea, and the shame and sin of others passed away with her, but she could not get peace. This beautiful and mysterious Iranian girl was still in pain with no ending until she died.
