The law of temptation, cruel youth

"What you see is fornication, what you don't see is the sadness in my eyes!"

Fornication and sadness, two incompatible words, are unified in the "Law of Temptation". But looking at the endless parties and sex scenes, you would think this is another "American Pie", but it is not. Unlike the superior and frivolous yellow-haired boys in "American Pie," these guys in "Law of Temptation" are people who know life and reality. Therefore, the same kind of fornication on the surface is only a kind of pleasure in the former, and evasion in the latter, and the inability to escape the subsequent cynicism.

The last scene of the film is a snowfall. It should be the time for the three protagonists, Sean, Roland and Paul, to remove their masks and reveal their hearts. When the hustle and bustle is gone, in a heavy snowfall, everyone dares to look at their own heart. Of course, everyone's heart is already scarred at this time. But the movie itself has been thoroughly sublimated here.

I often wonder, what will these people look like when they grow up? Will they eventually return to the mainstream and become well-dressed and respectable? Or, for them, there is no future at all?

The director did not give us any hint. Moreover, as a secret lie, the film also refuses to land and extend. In an "underground" that is not much related to the film, the clever Kusturica uses a fable to resolve the entangled love and hatred of the characters in the film. In this "Law of Temptation", it's just a snowfall. The snow will melt soon, what will happen afterwards? The answer is in time, in everyone's heart. But no one will really know.

Finally, I want to imitate a sentence at the end of "Underground" to describe my impression of this movie:
Once, there was a period of time called youth.

The Rules of Attraction quotes

  • Paul Denton: I watched him with growing intensity as he refilled the pipe in the dark and smokey din of the room. He delicately fingered what looked like dried moss to me, and it struck me then that I liked Sean because he looked, well, slutty. A boy who'd been around. A boy who couldn't remember if he was Catholic or not.

  • Rupert: Get it straight, fuckhead: I need you like I need a fucking asshole on my elbow.

    [puts elbow in Sean's face]

Rupert: Right here. An asshole. That's how much I need you.
