A model for war movies of this era

In 2001, "Brothers" appeared in front of people as "the most expensive TV series in history." That is, through this miniseries, Spielberg seemed to officially announce to the world: war movies should be written like this, war movies should be like this shoot. When Feng Xiaogang put "Assembly Number" on the screen, what we saw was indeed an American-style shooting technique of war scenes, and enough shocking war scenes, but we could not see a sufficient support for these scenes. The perfect plot. During the hot airing years of "Brothers", we never calmly believed that China’s past war films, including the classic war of liberation series, should be destroyed in front of this film and re-according to this kind of Template shooting. But if we think about it again today, should it still be the case? If the Americans randomly launch a model and we will imitate it, then even if we do it perfectly, we are still losers?
I have read the original work of "Brothers" and I admire the expressiveness of director Spielberg. He can actually express more than 400 pages of text in more than 400 minutes of footage. It does not make people feel that something is missing. On the contrary, I cannot find the image of war fully reflected in the movie from the text. Compared with the director's previous works, such as "Saving Private Ryan", we can see something more real than humanitarianism in this film, and that is the feeling of struggling on the death line. This feeling is fascinated by every actor in the TV series, as if they are on the real battlefield. We can see their fear from the heart, we can also see them go crazy, see them at a loss, and more You will see the posture they should fall down after being shot, as well as the sympathetic enemies seen from the main perspective.
And these are probably scenes that Chinese people who have been tortured by facial makeup for more than 60 years could not have imagined. For example, "Bright Sword", which was introduced to the mainland in the same period as "Brothers", we can say that its script is well written, or that it has worked hard in shaping the male protagonist, but it is not qualified as a war film. First of all, the handling of the war scene is too rough. The director and the action director are reluctant to study the details of the "posture when the soldier falls to the ground" and "what physical movement should the human body perform when the bomb explodes". However, these are the flesh and blood of war movies. Because of the poor performance of these pictures, we are watching "Bright Sword" as if we were watching Li Youbin's one-man show, with an empty script and listening to his monologue.
Secondly, in terms of humanistic care, we don’t want to have a life consciousness like other countries in China at that time, but I still don’t believe that the Eighth Route Army mentioned in elementary school textbooks is not afraid of death, and what bullets can still be. Standing shamelessly and receiving the second shot, if these words can still appear in the textbook in a high-sounding voice, it can only be said that this is the country's sorrow. In this era, hatred is no longer the mainstream thinking. Whether it is China or Japan, whether it is the ruling party or the opposition party, the sacrifice of either party is a tragedy of life, and there is no difference between lofty and humble. We are in awe of the martyrs, and we keep saying that we should inherit the fine tradition of standing and being beaten, but how many souls are actually regarded as "immortal" by us, and are now floating in the world as unjust souls? When we still show a war with a hateful eye, when we still instill the expressions and actions of every actor with facial makeup, then our film and television works can only be reduced to inferiority and will never stand up. The people of those days, including the Japanese fools who expedition to China, may not even understand the meaning of life at the moment of death, but we know that the filmmakers understand that as long as our perspective is "looking back", this is enough.
"Brothers" gives us the feeling that they are practicing, but the price of practicing is too cruel. Other movies do not give people this feeling. If we say what the gap between "Assembly Number" and it is, it can be said that the practice is not enough, and the humanistic care is too narrow and too stingy. To this day, Chinese war films have either a magnificent theme and immortal heroes, or they are chirping for a little thing. Whether this is a habit of going to extremes or a misunderstanding, we still don’t know, but we have to create one. We must have a long way to go for a war film that is eye-catching.

Band of Brothers quotes

  • Sgt. Alton More: I'm guessing they were Hitler's photo albums, sir. Sure had a lot of pictures of him in it.

Ronald Spiers: So, you looked at 'em, but you didn't take 'em?

Sgt. Alton More: That's right, sir.

Ronald Spiers: I don't believe you! I'll be watching you. You're dismissed.

    [as Moore leaves, smirking]

Ronald Spiers: You'd better not be lying to me.

  • Ronald Spiers: What?

SSgt. Floyd 'Tab' Talbert: Sir, if it's not going to put you in too much of a bind, I'd like to resign as company First Sergeant. If I had my choice, I miss being back amongst the men. I'd be happy to go to as Staff Sergeant, whichever platoon you want to put me in.

Ronald Spiers: Well, I guess you've earned your right to demote yourself.

SSgt. Floyd 'Tab' Talbert: Thank you, sir.

Ronald Spiers: You wanna take over Sergeant Grant's platoon?

SSgt. Floyd 'Tab' Talbert: That would do fine, sir.

Ronald Spiers: Alright then, report to Lieutenant Peacock. Let me know if he gives you any trouble.

SSgt. Floyd 'Tab' Talbert: Oh, sir? You make your decision yet?

    Ronald Spiers: Yeah, I did.
