A documentary full of romanticism

There are only two problems. 1. Selling dolphin meat as whale meat and schools forcing students to eat dolphin meat with high mercury content are the real scandals of this film. 2. Our state of existence is no longer the pastoral era. While preying on wild animals, we should do some compensatory work. There should be awe of nature. Even so, the filming was too subjective and sensational. I also like dolphins, but I can't criticize other people's eating habits for this. You say you have a spiritual communication with dolphins, so what? When I was young, I still had a mental communication with chickens. When I was three years old, there were three broiler chickens in my family. I named them. Every time my grandfather killed one, I would cry. You didn't see me cursing everyone who eats chicken because of this. Human beings always have two sides: one side is the primitive vitality that connects with nature, and the weak eats the strong. This vitality is self-interested, but it supports our desire to live. The other side is what long-term social life gives us—civilized, altruistic, and docile part of human nature. There has always been a battle between these two forces in the history of mankind, and any one force that has the upper hand will bring crisis. "No killing" itself is not wrong, but people who are full of ideals and passion for this slogan and regard killing as the opposite of human nature are often the people who have been protected by civilized society for a long time and are the furthest away from nature. I do not think that dolphins are not intelligent creatures, nor do I think that they can kill at will because they are not smart enough for humans. However, a theory that is to be convincing must be considered from its own opposite standpoint, and it is biased to disregard counterargument arguments. The people in the film crew would rather believe in the communication between nonverbal dolphins and them than to understand the cultural environment and living conditions of people who speak another language. Pretending to be a kind of political correctness, the mainstream ideology of post-industrial European and American countries is full of romantic imaginations of nature, but loses imagination to people who are also struggling to survive in the contradictions between nature and civilization. Avatar is an example.

The smile of the dolphins is nature's brightest disguise. This smile makes you mistakenly think that they are always happy.

If you are a caring person who cares about the environment and animals, you must watch this documentary. The making of this film involved a great deal of risk, and I applaud the dedication and courage of all those involved.

The Cove quotes

  • Richard O'Barry: There are lots of groups here in Japan: World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, International Fund for Animal Welfare. They all make hundreds of millions of dollars between them. This is the largest slaughter of dolphins in the wold. Where are they?

  • Louie Psihoyos: There is a kind of collective horror and deep disturbance when you see the footage. It's mind-boggling. They're doing exactly like they did with the large whales. Just slaughtering everyone they can get.
