The poster slogan of "Humanoid Centipede" reads three slogans: "Desperate, no mercy, and complete despair." The idea of stringing people into centipedes is very genius and abnormal. It does match these three slogans, but When I watched "Human Walrus" by the genius director Kevin Smith, I completely changed my outlook! "Human Centipede" shows off creative and cruel methods, and the fear it brings is at best appearance. The real fear that can reach people's heart is "Human Walrus".
The outline of the plot of "Human Walrus" begins with a roll of embarrassing tape. The Internet radio host Wallace (the male lead) intends to interview the subject of the film. As the content of the program, when he travels to Canada, the film The person involved was dead. He saw a note in the toilet that read "I have a good story" and other related content, which aroused his interest and went to interview Howard, the author of the note. Expected to step into a conspiracy.
In this film, you will see many actors looking directly at the camera, like being interviewed. The male and female protagonists or the guest star Johnny Depp have all looked directly at their own experiences or inner thoughts, and talk is better than acting. Hurry up, this kind of arrangement makes the plot not too long, and the content of the chat is mostly related to the plot, there has never been some meaningless dialogue, and it is difficult for the audience to empty it. And Howard, the main character in the play, doesn’t have this kind of interview-like footage. Instead, he adopts a side-shot confession. He tells about his experience: "My parents died, no one cared about him since he was a child, and he was sent to an orphanage. The orphanage sought funding at the time and had to be classified as a mental hospital. It was beaten and sexually assaulted in it. No one heard it. It was not until the age of fifteen that he fled Canada and took a boat to the United States." In the end, he concluded that "humans are too human Cruel, it's better to be a walrus."
Obviously, growing up in this environment, Howard would become frenzied and mad. The standard social marginalized people caused by childhood shadows, but the real key is here. Why is it to be a walrus instead of another species? The reason was that the ship sank when he took the boat. He struggled to swim to a small reef. The walrus accompanied him on the reef. The walrus gave him warmth that he had never had since childhood. The walrus became his soul sustenance and at the same time. The kindest species in his heart, but Howard is a human being. He himself said that "human beings are too cruel." While waiting for rescue, he killed the walrus, ate its meat to stop hunger, and betrayed the walrus. This matter has been buried deeply. In his mind, he will become a serial killer in the future, trap humans, ampute them, and sew them into a walrus, intending to use it as a substitute for the walrus of the past. The male protagonist is his Nth work. The humanoid horns just string people together, and their appearance is still human, but Howard is not that simple. What he makes is a real "human-shaped walrus."
Not only the appearance, he trained the "human-shaped walrus" he made to swim, eat and eat raw fish, and even the habits must be the same as the real walrus. By changing his habits, he gradually changed the heart of the "human-shaped walrus". In such a frenzied situation, it is inevitable that he will also be shaken. Finally, Howard said that when he killed the walrus, the walrus had a chance to fight back but didn't, which made him worry about it. Therefore, Howard pretends to be a walrus, attacks the hero, and tells him that there are only two ways to kill me and then you become a real walrus or be killed by me. Simply put, it’s either you or me. Death!
The essence of the whole film is in this section. For the hero, if you don’t kill Howard, you will be killed. If you kill Howard, you will lose the final humanity and become a true walrus. This is a dilemma; for Howard De, kill the male protagonist, find another target to make a "human-shaped walrus", or be killed by the male protagonist, although the body will die, but from a spiritual perspective, it can not only make atonement for the walrus that was killed by him in the first place. It also completely symbolizes his success, creating a "human-shaped walrus" with walruses on the outside and inside.
There are two important lines in the film. Howard said: "Walrus can't cry." The heroine said: "Crying is good. This is the difference between humans and animals. It means you have a soul." The protagonist who has become a "human walrus" has become a walrus physically and mentally. Although he can cry, I think he is already desperate and can't go back. In addition to the lines, the protagonist in the film likes to drink supermarket drinks, and the drink bottle also appeared in the final scene, but the protagonist did not even taste a bite and chose to eat raw fish, which also implies that he has long given up on his humanity. This is more cruel than "Human-shaped Centipede". "Human-shaped Centipede" uses cruel methods to transform the appearance of a person to make it a centipede. "Human-shaped Walrus" goes to a higher level. Both the appearance and the heart are not let go. This is terrifying. The strength is straightforward, and the artistic achievements of the two films are not at the same level.
The narrative of the whole film is smooth, sometimes interspersed with past events, the director’s ability to tell the story is unambiguous, almost no scene is superfluous, the atmosphere is great, the arranged eggs are also very powerful, and the content of the ending eggs is particularly ironic. People who ridicule others will always ridicule them. However, compared to the end credit eggs, the real easter egg of this film is Johnny Depp's cameo. It is not enough except for a cameo. He even played his daughter together. The director is very interesting and arranged for the father and daughter to have an opponent in the play. Enjoy alternative family happiness.
"Human Walrus" depicts a deep sense of fear that is straightforward and worth seeing!
