The protagonist of the film is three people, Aydin, the operator of a hotel in Asia Minor, his beautiful young wife, and his younger sister who has just divorced and returned from abroad. They are probably the wealthiest people in the area (probably the most educated). The income of the hotel is insignificant. In addition, the winter is cold and the tourists are scarce. The three of them live in a single room and spend more time on chatting and thinking.
Aydin is like a typical representative of public intellectuals, has a great enthusiasm for social affairs, writes commentary articles in the local media supplement, and has some fans. My younger sister felt that if an outdated actor insisted on commenting on public affairs that he was not familiar with, and saying something sweet in the way of the public, he was just gaining a false name; his wife even accused him of always throwing out "morality" and "ideal". A big word like "principle" sits on a sense of moral superiority, and even despises and even hurts others because of it.
My younger sister used to work as an interpreter, but after the divorce, she lost interest. She wondered if she would ask for forgiveness from her alcoholic husband instead of divorcing. She was ridiculed by "watching too much soap opera", and issued more irritating but sharp responses. This anger was considered by Aydin to be out of utter boredom, and it was a kind of venting or anger that Aydin had no courage to face her own plight.
The young wife is enthusiastic about helping rural primary schools and organizing local people to donate money to charity. The other two felt that she was just looking for a sense of existence and shaping her own "holy" image. They don't believe what she can accomplish-I'm afraid that the situation of the school and the students will not improve in the end. The only thing that will change is their reputation, because people may accuse them of embezzling donations.
There are also farm owners, poor tenants, single teachers...Everyone is working hard to discover the meaning of their lives, act, or reflect. Everyone was pointed out hypocrisy, and was rated as lazy, cowardly, condescending, and cynic. Goodwill is distorted, love cannot be passed on, and although it is all kind, no one understands who.
Speaking of it, their self-analysis is not frank, and their criticisms and suggestions to others can be regarded as sincere. But after spending so much time and effort, I couldn't understand what the other party did, the life they chose, and the beliefs they believed in. Even because of this process, the misunderstanding became deeper. Language always precedes the constraints of rigorous reason. The situation in the conversation, especially the self-defensive physiological reaction, will inevitably cause injustice. What I said is wrong.
These three people who are closest to each other in the world spend the cold winter together, but they don't show any warmth. On the contrary, the visitors to and from the hotel uttered the most compliments. It is no wonder that when a passenger who rides a motorcycle roaming the world bids farewell, Aydin shows infinite nostalgia. The other party had already stepped into the car, and he also invited him to go back to have a snack and sit down again. After being rejected, he said nonchalantly, "Don't forget us." The expression of the motorcyclist was unrecognizable under the helmet, and the accelerator jumped out abruptly, and Aydin's smile was still frozen on his face. That kind of baffling gesture made me almost cry.
After all, life is lonely, no one can help you live, no one can share for you. Trying to find someone who fully understands oneself and trying to use words to communicate will always fail and be disappointed.
The philosopher Wittgenstein wrote "Logical Philosophy" during World War I. Few people in the world understood it, and no one wanted to publish it. In the end, some publishers saw that Russell wrote the introduction to take over, but in Wittgenstein's view, even Russell himself failed to fully understand the meaning of the work. This book was later regarded as one of the most important works in the history of philosophy. However, it took up to four years to publish. During this time, Wittgenstein frequently communicated with friends and traveled to many places in Europe, just to find someone who could talk to. people.
It is in this work that Wittgenstein divides world affairs into two categories, things that can be said by propositions—that is, language—and things that cannot be said by propositions but can only be shown. In his view, those ineffables are more important.
In "Hibernation", everyone finally gave up the effort of communication. The younger sister didn't reappear at all, and the husband and wife agreed on the boundaries of each other's lives. The whole village is trapped in a hibernation-like predicament. This is true for the rich and even worse for the poor. Everyone wants to escape, but cannot do so because of economic distress or mental weakness. Aydin vowed to go to Istanbul to spend the winter, and he arrived at the station with a face, but at the last minute he turned his head to find an old friend for a drink, and caught a hare to go home the next day. They can't do without each other, not because of their attachment to a specific person, but because outside, they can only encounter more incomprehension. In philosophy, this can be regarded as the ultimate loneliness, the dilemma of human nature; in life, this inseparability is also a kind of comfort.
I also renewed my understanding of love as a result. Being like-minded and communicating understanding are important, but they are still second. After all, love is mutual companionship. It is the willingness to spend this life together after recognizing that one cannot understand another one after all. The things that cannot be said are more important.
