Synopsis
Alice (Margaret Lockwood), a girl from London, returns home by train to get married.
Sitting across from her was an old lady named Floy, a tutor.
Also in the box are the magician family from Italy and the duchess from Germany.
Alice and Floyd hit it off, and they met to have a meal in the dining car.
Mrs. Floyd was very particular about tea, she only drank the kind of tea she brought.
She is also very interesting. When introducing her name, she also writes her name on the train glass window for Alice to see.
In this way, the two of them talked for a long time before returning to the box to rest.
But when Alice woke up, something strange happened.
Mrs. Floyd was missing, and several people in the same box claimed that they had never seen her.
Alice couldn't believe what was happening before her. The conversation between the two was still vivid.
So, she hurriedly found the waiter of the dining car and asked, but the answer was that she was the only one in the restaurant at the time.
Alice had suffered a head injury, but she didn't believe that all her hallucinations had happened before, so she started searching the entire train.
Fortunately, she met an acquaintance in a carriage, a gentleman named Gilbert.
He decided to help Alice find Mrs. Floyd together.
The two asked everyone who Alice claimed to have met Mrs. Floyd, but none of them admitted to.
And a skull doctor on the train suspected that this must be Alice's hallucinations, and it was related to her head injury.
Just as the two lost hope, a strange Ms. Cumor suddenly appeared.
She claims to be the person sitting across from Alice...
Film Analysis
I remember the last time when I shared Hitchcock’s movie, he said that he played different tricks in almost every movie, and this "The Missing Lady" played Greek-style humor . It was also Hitchcock’s early days. One of the classic works.
Except for the necessary foreshadowing, the first half hour of the film is almost always a comedy-style group show. Sometimes it makes me mistakenly believe that I entered Chaplin's set by mistake. Looking at the innkeeper with ADHD, the two passionate British guys, and the maids full of the smell of pomegranate sisters, we almost forgot that this is Hitchcock's work.
But half an hour later, the film began to get into the topic. Although it is a comedy-style movie, the suspense setting is not compromised at all. When you are in a confined space, everyone thinks you are a lunatic, how would you feel? The heroine Alice has suffered head injuries. I believe that when everyone tells her that there is no such person as Freud, she herself will have doubts about herself, whether the previous events are all hallucinations, and the same is true for us as audiences.
When the waiter and the passengers in the same box looked at Alice innocently and told her that she was alone, I even began to wonder if it was another schizophrenic movie. However, Hitchcock quickly dispelled our thoughts, and he quickly turned the subject to human nature.
Although the plot is simple, when everyone chooses to lie for their own benefit, it still touches the hearts of our viewers. The safety of a stranger is not so important to them. The indifference of the bystanders is obvious. If there are no people who are like Alice to inquire the roots, the ending may be completely different. We didn't know until the end that Alice saved more than just It's just a person's life.
There are not many logical loopholes in the film, but we should have a greater tolerance for the movies of that era. After all, from the perspective of the storyline, it is already perfect. If the film is divided into three parts, the first part is purely to make you laugh, the second part enters the suspenseful theme, and the third part is the end of the "exciting" shootout. Of course, the romantic ending is still Hitchcock K’s favorite, isn’t it worth seeing?
Most of the time we have to strengthen our convictions. Others may lie because of their own interests, and the truth is not necessarily in the hands of the majority.
