The development of the story is not limited to space. Although it is in a concentration camp, it can also show the honor, responsibility and sacrifice of soldiers. But honor, responsibility, and sacrifice are discussed in every war movie. The most unique thing about this movie is that it partly put aside personal justice and evil, did not deliberately vilify the German soldiers, but through racial discrimination, democracy and human rights, let the two sides of the war under the common values. Using values as a link, it links the enemy and ourselves together. Through the experience of war, the involuntary personal destiny and personal failures will in turn reveal the cruelty of war. Of course, there are also the cunning and tactics of the US military in the film, as well as the humiliation and anger that the Germans finally caused due to their innocence.
But regardless of these, the director is not without the meaning of praising American values. At the same time, the German colonel did not deliberately belittle it. On the contrary, he portrayed the image of a German army who has a Yale University background, recognizes and respects American values, but is in a different camp. Before the end of the war, this German colonel with power in life and death could even sit on the witness stand calmly and accept questions from US prisoners of war, out of recognition and respect for the enemy. In the end, he was disappointed. Being in a different interest group, he could not make compromises on interests, and the common values could not allow him to make friends-even if he wanted to do so, he could only choose to be alone, even more. Not enough to stop the war.
By the way, as far as I can see, there is such a phenomenon in war movies. Although the German army is always unable to escape the fate of defeat in the end, there are very few movies that deliberately vilify the image of the German army. On the contrary, in the movies, most of the German soldiers are educated, powerful, tidy, and tough. Compared to some movies that deliberately vilify the enemy, I think it is the best to restore the truth. Of course, this can only be said after setting aside justice and evil.
For the leading actor, this movie reflects the growth of a dude. From the initial cowardice, to the final strength and come forward. After completing the task of blowing up the German military factory, the American colonel had the courage to take responsibility and chose to sacrifice himself in exchange for the lives of others. Although the German colonel realized the defeat, he did not anger and kill the rest of the American soldiers. Regardless of the war background of the film, the director also deliberately gave each protagonist more human meaning, and everyone has a side worthy of recognition. But the final result is only the success and failure of one party, survival and death, there is no possibility of coexistence. Then, the upper-level interest groups on both sides and the war itself are the final culprits.
