How to make such a bad movie from such a great book...

Sorry, this movie is so bad that I don't even feel like commenting in Chinese.

The novel "Great Expectations" was the first English Classic novel I have read. It has a very significant personal meaning to me. With great expectations, I watched this modernized version, and was utterly disillusioned.

The adaptation was shabby, the plot inconceivable, and the speech extremely cheesy and gushing. It lost every good thing possible carried by the original story. The setting in Florida and the 1960s is inconsistent with historical fact; and the ending of the movie was too out there and hence lost the quintessential beauty. All in all, it is just another failed Hollywood attempt to re-create a profound literature work that is beyond Americans' ability to comprehend.

Great Expectations quotes

  • Finn: Seven years passed, I stopped going to Paradiso Perduto, I stopped painting. I put aside the fantasy and the wealthy, and the heavenly girl who did not want me. None of it would happen to me again. I'd seen through it. I elected to grow up.

  • Finn: The night all of my dreams came true, and like all happy endings,It was a tragedy, Of my device, for I succeeded. I had cut myself loose from Joe, from the past, from the gulf, from poverty I had invented myself. I'd done it cruelly, but I had done it. I was free!
