Just plain and warm

Actually, I don’t know what or how much I expected from this movie. I just think that Sam Mendes, as the director of Revolutionary Road, Jarhead, and American Beauty, should be able to give some surprises, but I didn’t find it.

This is just a light comedy that wants to give some warm atmosphere. It does have a laugh, and it does make everyone laugh in the theater, but some of it is deliberate and too nonsensical. The idea of two protagonists wanting to relocate and walk through several cities to see if they are suitable is easy to understand, but it is a bit too one-sided to judge the quality of a city by a family. Of course, it can also be said that the director ignores other experiences in each city and only allows the audience to see the atypical family life in one city, but it is not impossible for these families to disrupt and reorder them, so they make their existence as if they are dedicated to the plot. Just let the protagonists look at the cutscenes, and then wait until the end to improve the central idea.

The first half is still enjoyable, but the ending is very floppy, very clichéd, expected, and very deliberate. Yes, this is a light comedy, but it should also be able to avoid being unconventional. So Away We Go just tends to be mediocre for me.

The original sound is very nice, very indie, and very in line with the expectations for this type of film.

Finally, I want to say that even though those embellished families are so thunderous, Maggie Gyllenhaal is so beautiful, so charming, and truly radiant!
