Sorrow wrapped in a smile

It is rare to see two movies of the same subject in this way. The US version is more real-life, and it feels like trying to move closer to the comedy route. But I still can't think of it as a comedy. The so-called "rich man with comedy talent" is just a beautiful excuse for people to laugh at her singing. The French edition has a larger and more profound revision.

The lavish Florence is very lonely. Singing is the meaning of her life, and she also used her financial resources to construct a musical social circle. In the French version, everyone laughed at her; in the American version, some women with bad ears seemed to have a sincere friendship with her.

Lonely Florence yearns for love. In the French version, the husband had no sparks for her, and instead caught up with friends who were sponsored by her, and showed more pity to her. In the American version, her husband gave her a lot of love and seemed to really care about her, but he always felt that he was for inheritance.

The French version of Marguerite rarely has a husband to accompany her. Instead, she spoils her with her music preferences and is the housekeeper, serving her and protecting her, making her happy. But the atmosphere of the US version of Florence alone is stronger.

This lady who was born lacking in sound and loved the singing of a flowery soprano, died of illness one month after her first grand public performance. Melie Streep's singing voice is good at first. In the American version, she insists on singing badly, but she can't live up to her talent. In the return, she still believes that her singing is very beautiful. The French version of Catherine Flo doesn't know how to sing, and she feels more sincere in her out-of-tune.

Florence Foster Jenkins quotes

  • St Clair Bayfield: Are you fond of sandwiches?

    Cosmé McMoon: Yes.

St Clair Bayfield: Good, good. Madam Florence is inordinately fond of sandwiches. And potato salad as well. When we throw parties we make mountains of the stuff. It would serve you well to consume both with enthusiasm.

    Cosmé McMoon: I shall.

  • St Clair Bayfield: If you can forgive Madam Florence her little eccentricities, you'll find her to be a most generous and delightful person. Ours is a very happy world.
