We all sat in the dark for four days, trying to figure out "Pulp Fiction" scene by scene. We put the DVD player upside down, paused for a while, and slowed in for a while. We have a total of 300 people, and they are still very democratic: no matter who finds anything, we stop to discuss it. The goal is to study this labyrinthine movie.
Of course, some people do not like "Pulp Fiction". This is probably the least popular movie in the US with a box office of over one million. Some people wrote in saying that the film was too violent, superficial, and obscene, and "shit it doesn't make sense." They watched it for 20 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour, and then walked away. However, for those who like this movie, Quentin Tarantino's movie is the most fascinating of recent films. They discussed every nuance of the film, and that level of enthusiasm probably only appeared when they discussed Kubrick's "2001". Among the young people in the university, there are few films in recent years that can surpass this one.
From "Citizen Kane" to "The Silent Lambs", I have made this kind of analysis of shots in many movies. I found that if you find a large group of people who are serious about movies, sit in the dark, and ask them to express their opinions freely, no matter what the question is, someone will answer it. For example, this time, there is no doubt that the voice of an 11-year-old child was the one who expressed his opinion in the dark.
After four days, I admired the film more and more. It is more subtle and more complicated than it looks. The questions that plagued people who watched this film for the first time are actually answered in the script written by Quentin Tarantino and Roger Afrey (winning the Oscar for best screenplay). Of course, people who saw it for the first time couldn't think of it.
The story of the film is intertwined, rather than chronologically unfolding, so the first position of the film can be echoed, the middle part of the film actually happens after the end of the film. One of the main characters appeared on the screen even after being killed. Why are movies told in this way? There are probably three reasons: (1) Because Quentin Tarantino, like his fans said, is tired of the dragging linear story lines. (2) Make his script similar to the "hypertext" on the computer. For example, if you click on "Gold Watch", you will see the story of Butch, and if you click on "Foot Massage", you will see Vincent's unlucky date. (3) The main story clues in "Pulp Fiction" all end with some kind of redemption, and the most important one is that Zhu Si survived a catastrophe and decided to wash his hands. Therefore, even though this is not the last time in time, it is reasonable to put it at the end of the film.
The first time I watched this movie, I thought it was very violent, but when I watched it the second time and the third time, I found that it was not as violent as I thought before. But why does it seem violent? Because the film always uses humorous language to gag and postpone the occurrence of violence. In fact, only seven people’s deaths can be counted in the film:
——Three punks in the apartment, one on the chair, one on the sofa, and one in the toilet. They were killed by Vincent (John Travolta) and Zhu Si (Jackson) killed it.
——Marvin, the fourth bastard in the apartment, was accidentally shot and killed by Vincent in the back seat of the car.
-Vincent was killed by Butch (Bruce Willis).
——Two people in the pawnshop were killed: the shopkeeper Maynard and his friend Zed.
——The deaths of two other people were not manifested in a direct way: Butch’s opponent killed in the boxing ring, and "the Gimp", who was wearing leather in the basement of the pawnshop.
In contrast, several people were rescued in the film. Mia (Uma Thurman) was rescued from drug overdose, Butch rescued Marcellus in the basement, and Zhu Si persuaded the bunny and pumpkin head in the restaurant to save the diners in the restaurant. Also, Vincent and Zhu Si were shot with guns and survived. Zhu Si thought it was a miracle and God's will, so he decided not to wash his hands. Vincent didn't care, and finally paid the price. There is also a funny clue about how Butch's ancestral gold watch was returned to him.
During our careful viewing of the movie, we found that many violent elements in the film were placed off the screen. When the bastard in the apartment was shot, the camera was aimed at Vincent and Zhu Si. When Mia was given a subcutaneous injection, the camera switched to Mia suddenly sitting up at the last minute. We can't see the shooting in the back seat of the car either. The violent scenes in the basement are visible, but they are not beyond the level of fighting scenes in ordinary movies.
The more you watch this film, the more strongly you will feel that something religious is hidden beneath the storyline. To a large extent this has to do with the suitcase of Marcellus, the one that Vincent and Ju Si snatched back from the apartment. We don't know what's in the box, we only see what's inside is shining brightly. There are many speculations about the contents of the box, but we may never know. We noticed that the code for opening the box is 666-Satan's mark. So some people thought, maybe the band behind Marcellus's neck was covering the number 666. Is he a demon? You know, Zhu Si, who believed that he was saved by God, survived, and Vincent, who despised God, died in the end.
Vincent was shot to death by Butch when he came out of the toilet (something happens when people go to the toilet in this movie). One detail I didn't notice when I first saw it was that the gun used by Butch was from Marcellus. He went out to buy food and left the gun on the kitchen counter. Some people say: The guys who write scripts are not lazy at all, they spend a lot of time on details, and most people will not notice these details.
There is also a thread in the film: many weapons are not used in the right place (the guns that did not hit Vincent and Juss, the guns that killed Vincent, the guns that escaped in the car, the guns that were used to grab restaurants, the pawnshops Those guys’ guns). After Zhu Si changed his mind, his own gun was even used to organize violence in restaurants.
We also discovered some little secrets in the less important places in the film. The waiter at the bar in Jack Rabbit Slim's (the bar where Marcellus confesses tasks to Butch) is played by Steve Buscemi. It's the quick-spoken Mr. Pink in "Dropping Dog". There are also three members who appeared in "Falling Dog" in "Pulp Fiction", Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Tarantino. There is a Vic Vega in "Falling Dog", which may have something to do with Vincent Vega.
When Butch sneaked past a window in his apartment, he could see the "Jack Rabbit Slim's" mark through the open window. There is also a very interesting place. A neon sign "Killian's Red beer" can be seen in the pawnshop, but some letters are broken, and the rest is "Kill ed". Later, when Butch ran away on a Zed motorcycle, he watched I clicked on the motorcycle key chain, and there was a Z on it. Combine this Z with "Kill ed" to get "Kill Zed". In fact, Butch just killed Zed at that time. There is a "Grace" on the motorcycle's fuel tank, and Butch's escape is not a gift from God (Grace).
There are two lenses that we discussed a lot. One is the golden glitter on the screen when Vincent and Zhu Si were killing them in the apartment. Is that related to the suitcase? The other is that when Marcellus instructed Butch to fight a fake punch, he was facing the camera of Bruce Willis. Bruce Willis's face is half-dark and half-dark, split vertically. The boundaries are very clear, and we even wonder if makeup is used to enhance this effect.
The dialogue in the film is very humorous, and in some places it is obviously a tribute to some classic works, but the form is more modern and insignificant. At the beginning of the film, Vincent and Jus discussed the difference between French and American burgers, which reminds me of Jim and Huckleberry Finn’s discussion about why French people don’t speak English. Zhu Si always likes to quote a passage from the Bible Ezekiel, but in fact only a small part is the same as the original text, and more of it is his own random fabrication.
One of the basic strategies of this film is to use character dialogue to drag the violent scenes back. For example, when Mia was lying on the ground and about to die, two men were studying the use of syringes. This technique was also used at the beginning of the film. Vincent and Zhu Si walked in the corridor of the apartment while discussing what foot massage. The camera at this time has been following them all the time. When the two people walked to the door of the room they were going to, they realized that time was not yet there, so they continued to walk deep into the corridor and continued their discussion. But at this time the camera stopped and stayed at the door, as if telling us in the language of the camera: this is where the story will happen. However, the two people were still talking unhurriedly, as if even the camera was impatient, and the atmosphere became more and more tense.
Some people like "Pulp Fiction", some people hate it. But the reason is the same: because this film always seems to be playing with the expectations of the audience, and it never follows the rules. It organizes the material as it pleases, in contrast to the current US action movies that have fallen into a formulaic quagmire. Quentin Tarantino threw away all the rules and regulations taught in the Hollywood screenwriting factory and created a new way of screenwriting from scratch. "Pulp Fiction" may be the most influential movie in the next five years, because it saves us from countless predictable formulaic plots.
So thank you Quentin Tarantino.
