If you want to change Shakespeare's work into a movie, you must have a strategy. Especially in the contemporary era, after all, classic-style adaptations of classic dramas by the elderly have long existed, and new tricks are needed to play them in order to please today's audiences.
Just like the "Romeo and Juliet" many years ago, it was actually filmed according to the MTV method. Young people think that being cool is the most important thing.
That movie may not have a name in the history of filming, but it is really popular with a pair of male and female protagonists.
Well, to this old man Sha’s shortest, cruelest and most well-known drama "Macbeth", which has been preceded by the classics of Orson Wilson and Roman Polanski, what new tricks can there be?
Director Justin Kuzel's answer should be one word: visual.
The wild wilderness of Scotland, combined with the restoration of the realistic character modeling, gives the film a real texture;
the use of a large number of symbolic images makes the famous psychological struggle of the characters, and the externalization becomes a visual feast.
Every shot is expressing meaning, so we see a standard visualized Shakespeare play.
So when I was watching the movie, I couldn't help but pause and take screenshots. So I collected a bunch of exquisite pictures.
It's just that vision can make a "good-looking" movie, but it doesn't necessarily make a great work.
The 2015 version of "Macbeth" is somewhat disappointing. Because it shows the entanglement of many creators.
First of all, drama is the art of language, not necessarily movies. This film is too faithful to the original in terms of language, and copied the old English dialogue of the original. So I only heard the actors desperately speaking in the classical English that people didn’t understand. You are Thee, Yours is Thy, all kinds of original words and strange sentence patterns. Don’t talk about me who speak English as a foreign language. Even the aboriginal British, if it weren't for a schoolmaster or a shaman, I'm afraid it would sound very strenuous. Therefore, the lines and monologues that drive the plot and the inner activities of the characters lose their communicative power first.
Secondly, the characterization is somewhat superficial. How was the evil in Macbeth's heart seduced step by step, making him a bloodthirsty tyrant? How is his ambition intertwined with fragility, leading him to the abyss of madness? Where did his wife's ruthlessness and ambition come from? How did he get inspired to go the opposite way with his husband? (While these questions are still circling in my mind, suddenly, Mrs. Macbeth, is dead.)
Fassbender and Gorion are the two best actors today. They also performed their best performances in the movie, but for some reason we were not moved. Perhaps because they often appear in a very symbolic and visually full picture. You are busy understanding what the picture tells you, and often ignore their performance. So, are they too "Contextualized"?
Or is it because the tone of the movie is so dim that you can't see the expressions on their faces at all?
In short, "Macbeth" is more like a compromise between the two ideas of "faithful to the original" and "catering to the present". In the end, it did not do a good job in either aspect. We did not really enter the inner world of Macbeth and his wife, nor did we deeply understand the original desire and sin in human nature. We just got baptized in our eyes and left some impressions in our minds. By the way, we learned how to create A highly symbolic and highly compelling picture".
