"Battleship Potemkin" is a typical symbol of a silent film as an art
December 28, 1895 was the birth day of the world cinema, and it has been 120 years. Just now we first watched several short films made by the Lumière brothers, such as "The Train Arrival", "Snake Dance", "Playing Cards", "Buck's Oil Field-Close-up Photography", "Japanese Actors-Wig Exercises", " "Italian Kings", "Automatic Sausage Shop", "Donkey's Game", etc. These are all films 120 years ago. They are all documentaries. They are true records and reproductions of various actual activities in the outside world. They are naturally antiquities of movies. This period is called the birth and dissemination period of film technology, which lasted for about 20 years, and it also included the "movie magic" style juggling films of Meili Ai. From 1915 to 1927, it was the initial period of film as an art. It was represented by story films such as "The Birth of a Nation" and "Party Facing Differences" filmed by American Griffith in 1915 and 1916. And superb use of montage techniques. Next is the "Battleship Potemkin" that we will look at later today. It was a film shot by Soviet Eisenstein in 1925. Before the appearance of sound films in 1927, this was a silent or silent period of film art, and it was a period when films basically formed a systematic and complete artistic expression method. In other words, in the 12 years since the film was born 20 years ago, the film has matured sufficiently as an art. And "Battleship Potemkin" is a typical sign of a silent film as an art. Its position in the history of world cinema, judging from various authoritative selection lists-whether in the top 100 or in the top ten-it will have a place. Although the plot of the film against the tyranny of the Russian Tsarist is restricted by the background of the Soviet October Revolution, and the film began with Lenin’s quotations, the value of the film art expression method embodied in the film has always been recognized by the film industry. In other words, the traditional film critics did not consider the ideological content contained in it, but precisely looked at and evaluated film techniques and film montages. However, the film "Battleship Potemkin" is still different from modern story films in at least the following two points: one is the protagonist. Although "Battleship Potemkin" can also see the specific image of the sailor Huakulinchuk who was eventually shot, it is generally said to be the leader of the uprising sailor and the Odessa masses who supported the uprising. The film focuses on events, rather than portraying and shaping the personalities of individual characters. The second is the structure of the film. It is not a linear story, but a chapter-by-chapter, which is more like an expression of opera and dance drama. It was once called a "poem movie." The artistic structure of the film And the montage technique, the most praised is Chapter 4 "The Staircase of Odessa". The plot is that the sailor was shot and killed, the mass mourning activities formed a torrent, and the Tsarist army was transferred to suppress it. The scene is the crowd running down the stairs and the army shooting from top to bottom, using a parallel montage technique.

The symphony has been combined with the background screen shots in play, express a general grand narrative
Fang Min: The first time watching this movie, fresh, strong visual impact of hearing, has been combined with the symphony background screen shots in play. It sets off the overall grand narrative, which is very appropriate. The film does not need to be expressed in words, and in fact it does not need to be.

silent not completely silent language, but there is no sound of language
Fan Daming: At the time of film technology has not reached so that the combination of sound and picture to show the extent of only silent silent. It's not that there is no language at all, but there is no voiced language. The characters’ dialogue is expressed through subtitles.

The scenes of the film are magnificent, there are macro and micro, although there is no voice language, but "silence is better than sound at this time"
Wang Yanlin: The scene of the film is magnificent, there are macro and micro, such as the mother who walks up with the child, and the sliding of the stroller, etc. , Although there is no spoken language, "silent is better than sound at this time". The film vividly shows the brutality of the army and war.
Eisenstein's work "Battleship Potemkin" After-viewing forum: Wang Xilin's speech

The

film
alludes to the decline of Tsarist Russia, laying the foundation for the victory of the October Revolution. Sun Fengfeng: The quality of the food on the ship fell to a level that was difficult to swallow. The officers managed rudely, the sailors finally revolted, and the masses enthusiastically supported them. To the bloody suppression. This alluded to the decline of Tsarist Russia from prosperity and laid the foundation for the victory of the October Revolution; secondly, it also shows that where there is oppression, there will be resistance; and again, it also reflects that the righteous side will always get the support of the masses. .

The uprising of the battleship is a real historical event. But this anti-tsarist uprising ultimately failed
Fan Daming: movie specific historical background of the Russian Revolution of 1905, warships of the uprising, was the historical events actually happened. But this anti-Tsarist uprising ultimately failed. It was not until the "February Revolution" that broke out in 1917 that the tsarist imperial rule was victoriously overthrown. The "February Revolution" produced a provisional government, and the Bolshevik regime led by Lenin formed a coexistence of the two regimes before the October Revolution. However, the film itself did not intercept the Potemkin after the other naval fleets of the czar finally came over, and the soldiers from both sides did not start fighting. Historically, the Potemkin did arrive in Odessa after the uprising, and was finally forced to drive to Romania; it was extradited to the tsarist government the following year, and many of the uprising sailors were sentenced to heavy punishment.

The film was never one to comment on terms of ideology; on parallel montage
Liu Peng: if ideologically speaking, the uprising led people together, in a collective behavior, as long as the leaders of the nature of the characters appear, for example, It is easy for the masses to instigate by giving speeches, agitation, etc., for the authorities, it is indeed very easy for dangerous incidents to occur.

Fan Daming: This film has been discussed and studied for so many years, but no one has ever commented on it from the ideological perspective. The film industry just interprets its film skills—especially the parallel montage method composed of two angles or two aspects of editing. This montage technique has been used in films such as "The Birth of a Nation" and "Party Facing Differences" directed by American Griffith in the previous 10 years. But Griffith is mainly practicing this technique, and in the theoretical construction of montage, the Soviet film school headed by Eisenstein is its true creator and completer. In summary, there are two methods of film aesthetics: long shots and montages. Don't talk about long shots here. Montage means "editing" in French. All montage techniques are assembled with relatively short shots. Because from the perspective of film screening, it is linear and continuous in time. But to show two simultaneous events on the screen, or at the same place or different places, then only through editing, the two continuous shots are cut into segments, and then interspersed with each other, so that the "and" can be displayed. At the same time, the two events are happening at the same time.
Liu Peng: It's like "two flowers bloom, one branch on each table" in the storytelling.

Movie editing is absolutely indispensable. Regarding the long shots and the "in-lens montage"
Fan Daming: In addition, a film of about 100 minutes may take a year or even a few decades to describe things. You can never describe it 1:1 truthfully. You must compress and compress it. Abridged, select the most essential paragraphs and shots to express. Editing, in this sense, is naturally indispensable. Even any literary and artistic work, when reflecting real life or making artistic fiction, must take up the weapon of editing. For those who advocate long shots, it is actually difficult to complete a movie with one continuous shot. Many specific methods of long shots actually use the mobile shooting method of lens scheduling. The result of shooting in this way, although there is no editing, can still make the lens picture show rich content. Some people call this shooting technique "internal lens montage".

Three shots of stone lions in different states: about metaphor montage
Fan Daming: In addition, it is the momentary shot of the environment depicted at the end of Chapter 4: The combination of shots of three stone lions in different states is usually called metaphoric montage, which is the use of film metaphors. The stone lion’s sleeping, awakening, and leaping, the continuous switching of images in three different states, metaphors and symbolizes the awakening of the people, and the revolutionary movement is set off.
Fang Min: At the beginning of the film, the shot of the waves beating is also a metaphor, and those who are oppressed must resist.
Fan Daming: This is a metaphor for the entire film. The wave of the sea is the wave of revolution.

Admire the photographer. Today, technological improvements, many scenes can be produced in a studio digital
Wang Shu Jin: admire photographer. I think the failure of the uprising was because there was no mainstay.
Fang Min: When the movie was first produced, the purpose of shooting was to restore reality. But then I needed to show the story, so I used my brain to make technical improvements. Nowadays, many scenes can be digitally produced in the studio. Especially in Hollywood, the production level is very high in this regard.
Wang Shujin: I remember watching a Chaplin movie. He was playing on a train with lights, which created a very vivid effect.

Shoot this film to commemorate the 1905 Revolution and the 20th anniversary of the uprising warships
Fan Daming: scene shot this film, it should be true. The story happened in 1905. The film was made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1905 Revolution and the Warship Uprising. Of course, it was also to allude to the October Revolution.

Xia Yan, Chen Huangmei leadership of the Ministry of Culture and the Film Bureau of the times, always good old
Wang Bei Lin: the early years of Soviet films have a lot of good films, such as "history of suffering" Ah • Tolstoy's trilogy, including "two The three films "Sisters", "1918" and "Dark Morning", as well as Sholokhov's "Quiet Don River" and so on.
Fan Daming: These films were all imported from my country in the 1960s, and they were released after translation. I saw it when I was young. That was the era of the Ministry of Culture and Film Bureau led by Xia Yan and Chen Huangmei, and it will always be missed. At present, the only thing I see in the disc market is "Quiet Don", which is genuine, but the quality of the film is not ideal. The problem is that there is no good domestic audio-visual production unit to digitally preserve and distribute all the foreign translated films officially released by China Film Corporation that year. There may also be a copyright issue, or the issue of who will pay the money. In this regard, the Americans and other Western countries have achieved this.

Eisenstein puts the audience in feeling rather than distancing, making vision (eyes) communicate directly to nerves rather than brains, all relying on sensual storytelling with strong editing (famous for the Odessa Staircase Stroller and the Sailor Corps Front Group). The tension, horror, excitement, epic (the fifth act) and the tension, fear, excitement, and epic (the fifth act) and the powerful and treacherous soundtrack are an exploration of an alternative 'technocratic'.

Battleship Potemkin quotes

  • Sailors: BROTHERS!

  • Title Card: Above the heads of the tsar's admirals thundered a brotherly hurrah. And proudly waving the red flag of victory, without a single shot, the rebellious battleship passed through the rows of the squadron.
