Newton's firmness

Newton decided to remove the collar from the black man's neck. There will be a noise.
"The hounds will come when they hear the sound."
"How many hounds are there?"
"The patrol will also come."
"How many people are there in the patrol?"
Newton launched an ambush on the patrol who heard the sound.
This is one of his choices at a critical moment. In the process of fighting for the rights of poor people and slaves, all his decisions were so decisive, without ambiguity, and directed towards the goal.
More importantly, he was able to recognize the positioning of his class—a tool sacrificed for the rule of the rich and powerful under the guise of glorious war slogans. Next is the courage to fight for rights.
Perhaps these things have left a shadow in his heart: providing forty slaves can be exempted from military service; the army can expropriate private property at will. This is also the fact that he realizes that this undertaking is not pure. When his young nephew was also drafted into the army and died on the battlefield, he decided to leave here. The nephew's body is to be buried in his hometown, which is the direct reason why he wants to leave the war.
If the story ends here, he is a courageous deserter at best. When he encountered soldiers who unreasonably expropriated the widow’s neighbor’s property. He organized a resistance: a woman + a deserter + three children + 5 shotguns.
From the point of view of the military government, this behavior cannot be called an insult; they will find it ridiculous-a man with a man's arm as a car. They arrested Newton. Fortunately, there is an inaccessible swamp, which provides physical protection for his "rebellious" behavior.
Here he met a black partner with a collar around his neck.
Maybe Newton has no goals. The consistency of his behavior in front of what happened pushed him to the memory of history. As time progressed and the time matured, he summoned villagers who had the same identity as him and launched a war.
Although the end of the Civil War caused the collapse of the southern military government policy that was pressing on them, the members of the old government still controlled the new government. Newton's armed forces have been disbanded with the end of this war. The members of the government hate the former organizer. He and his "comrades" were squeezed out to farm in remote areas.
Under the new government, he found that although the black slave system was abolished, the status of blacks had not really been restored. He and his black comrades once again fought against this injustice. The times have given the rebels different ways. This time they tried to fight for the real liberation of blacks by voting. But in the context of the entire contempt for blacks, they are regarded as outliers. With the assassinations carried out by the KKK, he became very powerless in the face of this era.
Although the film ends here, I believe Newton will stick to it. Just as he was fighting for the rights of the poor.
You have to pay a price for everything you do. The performance of courage comes from your firmness in your goals and your disregard for the price.
