During the Civil War, Newton Knight defected from the Southern Army and returned to his hometown. In order to avoid capture, he ran to a swamp and settled down in a swamp. From then on, he met a few black people who had fled and lived a free life in the swamp. The news of the Free Marsh has spread like wildfire, and more and more people are coming here for different reasons, but the same purpose. They robbed the army's grain and grass and the crops of large farmers, and lived the life of "Liangshan heroes." The military wanted to encircle and suppress it, but was unable to proceed because of concerns about the advantages of the marshland. Several people who wanted to surrender to the military were relentlessly hanged by the military after leaving the swamp. The turning point of the matter came. Newton Knight led the Legion of Exiles to defeat the Army Corps in one fell swoop and hanged the place. Archon. Then they occupied three counties and wanted to get support from the Northern Army, but they could not get the approval of the Northern Army. So Newton Knight declared that they are "Jones's free country".
After the Civil War, the situation of the blacks was not better. Newton Knight worked with his black friends in the struggle to liberate the slaves and led the blacks to vote together. At the same time, he and his friends also suffered crazy revenge from the KKK. His former slave wife advised him to leave Mississippi and go to the North, where he should be kinder to the blacks, but he insisted on staying in his hometown.
The film is also interspersed with a court trial more than 80 years later. Newton Knight’s great-grandson was illegally married to a white woman because one-eighth of the black descent was married. The battle Newton Knight fought for all his life was unsuccessful until almost a hundred years later. Even now the United States? Race and skin color are still important contradictions in society. Fortunately, Newton Knight’s great-grandson was as bloody and stubborn as his great-grandfather, and he was unwilling to accept out-of-court mediation.
This is a movie with the main theme. The story told by Gary Rose, the director of "The Pentium Age", is too long, and by the way, the story of the court trial more than 80 years later, so that the drama conflict is too scattered, and the audience is not able to follow the film. Richie knew the difficulty of what Newton Knight did back then, but he could feel it was great. For example, the scene in which the black people were led to vote at the end should have performed better, but due to time, it could only end in a hurry.
Matthew McConaughey's performance is still good. The two scenes of the anger of losing a child in the swamp and the grief of losing a black friend are very impressive.
