A ghost wandering in Europe-"Nether"

Let’s talk about the movie "Nether" today.

The title Spectral (2016), alias Ghost Space (Taiwan).

Shortly after the 2016 release of "Nether", it was bought out by Netflix and became Netflix's first war science fiction film.

After watching "Nether", you will have to admire Netflix's unique vision. Netflix can become the king of streaming media must have its own advantages. Choosing to buy out this war sci-fi movie as its own war sci-fi movie is naturally full of highlights, in line with Netflix's consistent style.

The most important foundation of science fiction works is science fiction (nonsense), and creators must boldly fantasize on the basis of science. A good scientific foundation is half of the success of fantasy. Whether it is hard science fiction or soft science fiction, those without science can only be regarded as fantasy and magic works. Only with the endorsement of the scientific foundation can they have the foundation to become a science fiction blockbuster.

This "Nether" sci-fi idea is exquisite, the film is excellent, it has all the necessary conditions for an excellent sci-fi work, and has the potential to become a hit. The rest just needs to be polished.

Just looking at the visual effects presented by "Nether", it is hard for the audience to imagine that this is a film costing "only" 30 million US dollars. Compared to Hollywood blockbusters that start at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars, the cost of $30 million is really not that high. Moreover, the visual effects of "Nether" are completely comparable to the effects of first-line large-scale entertainment films.

The core of the story of "Nether" is highly consistent with other American entertainment films. A long-term civil war broke out in an unknown small country in Moldova in Eastern Europe. Under the intervention of foreign forces, the war was endless and the battle between government and rebels was protracted.

In this context, American soldiers raised the banner of world police and entered the conflict zone to spread American civilization to small Eastern European countries. In Moldova, American soldiers encountered an unprecedented enemy, lost their positions and fell into a passive position for a while.

In the past, the U.S. world police always acted as lonely heroes, "saving" people everywhere in the world, either against the Nazis, against the green or against the old Maozi, even zombies and aliens. Anyway, there is no thing in this world that the Americans cannot solve.

This time, "Nether" is a bit different. The American soldiers are not facing enemies in the ordinary sense, but enemies that are visible and invisible.

When I first watched "Netherworld", there was a feeling of deja vu. The mysterious and unpredictable enemy setting was very similar to Liu Cixin's "Ball Lightning". There was a sense of both macroelectronics and quantum people.

The enemy can be seen by special equipment, but not by the naked eye, in a superimposed state of visible and invisible. This is very similar to the setting in "Ball Lightning". Even in "Three-Body", the wall-facer wants to use this method to deal with the three-body man.

"Nether" made a sci-fi movie with a ghostly temperament. If you simply treat the enemy as a ghost, the film will be downgraded by several grades. The most effortless explanation is also the last thing the audience wants to see.

All phenomena that cannot be explained by current technology are treated as magic, miracles, or ghosts. The black technology in superheroes such as Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Thor seems to be explained by scientific methods. The audience knows that this is nonsense, it is a brainless entertainment film under the banner of science fiction.

Unlike "Nether", it uses complete and proven scientific elements as the basic setting, and imagines a self-consistent science fiction story, which the audience agrees very much with.

The most central setting in "Nether" is the Bose-Einstein condensate.

The Bose-Einstein condensate is a gaseous, superfluid state of matter (physical state) exhibited by boson atoms when they are cooled to near absolute zero.

Using rubidium atoms to confirm the Bose-Einstein condensate

Middle image: Bose-Einstein condensation has just appeared.

Right: Almost all the remaining atoms are in the Bose-Einstein condensate state.

In the 1920s, Satjendra Nat Bose and Albert Einstein predicted this state based on Bose’s statistical mechanics of photons, and the boson cooled to a very low temperature. Later they will "fall" ("condense") into the lowest possible quantum state, resulting in a completely new phase state. Some macroscopic properties of the system will change, for example, the specific heat of the system will jump with the change of temperature, and so on.

In 1995, Wolfgang Kateley of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Eric Cornell and Karl Wiman of the University of Colorado at Bald used gaseous rubidium atoms to obtain Bose for the first time at a low temperature of 170 nK. -Einstein condenses. In 2001 they won the Nobel Prize in Physics for this.

In general, atoms are constantly in irregular thermal motion, and the speed of motion is different, and it is impossible for a large number of atoms to be in the same state. At very low temperatures, a system composed of certain particles may have a large number of particles in the same state. Such particles are a type of particles called bosons. The state they are in is the Bose-Einstein condensed state mentioned in "Nether".

"Nether" carried forward the Bose-Einstein condensed state and successfully created a war science fiction movie with the temperament of a horror movie. It laid the foundation of science fiction with the most reasonable scientific basis. It is also one of the few science fiction movies in recent years that can meet the proven cutting-edge physics.

Science and technology are the primary productive forces. After scientists achieve theoretical breakthroughs, the specific application depends on luck. Good use can benefit mankind, and bad use can become a fast channel to destroy mankind.

There is no justice in the war. One side is armed and brutal, turning the forefront Bose-Einstein cohesion into torture that brutalizes the people, and the other side is soldiers suppressing the border and subverting other countries' regimes. But don’t acquiesce in the correctness of the protagonist’s behavior just because you follow the protagonist’s perspective.

Of course, we can ignore that in the film, the Americans are daily black and old. If you watch too much, you will naturally be immune to the ideological struggles and private goods entrained in the film.

After all, the movie must have an imaginary enemy to highlight the advanced civilization of the lighthouse country, otherwise how to make the story.

A ghost wanders in Europe,

Cutting-edge technology was used by the war.

  • Clyne: So, maybe there are things science can't answer.

    [powering down]

Fran Madison: No. Wait, no. This is why we came here. This is the evidence. This is why you came, remember? Remember? So many people have died. You said it. You said, "I wanna know why."

    Clyne: I know enough.

Fran Madison: You have to think about the bigger picture.

    Clyne: I am.

Fran Madison: I don't think they know how.
