After watching the pre-screening, I really like the lens and the picture. My favorite is Billi running on the streets of Changchun. The lens pulls across a whole street, pulls across the colorful shop signs, pulls across the rushing pedestrians and vehicles. Billi is constantly changing. In the changing picture, she was dressed in a clean plain coat and long skirt. She was running on the street panting by herself, and I was sitting in a Los Angeles theater crying.
There are many other scenes that touched the audience. Grandma couldn’t help coughing constantly during the check-up. The extended family bowed to grandpa three times in the cemetery. The family walked down the streets of Changchun worriedly. At the wedding, the uncle couldn’t cry, and Billi and grandma were tight. Embrace speechlessly. The picture slowed down, zoomed in, staying still for a long time at that moment, time was stretched out, and the ground seemed to be permanently stagnated and melted into it.
A static camera, a clean picture, and a simple composition directly and sincerely present a fragment of life, an eternal moment.
It's so beautiful .
A movie makes people cry and laugh , and my heart is very sad.
In contrast, the line skills are somewhat insufficient . It's not that the Chinese is not smooth or authentic. When you look at each sentence separately, it is smooth and natural, but sometimes the dialogue as a whole is a bit awkward and blunt, especially the touching and laughable parts, and the lines are somewhat deliberate and purposeful. Too strong .
Why?
I thought about it, and felt that there are two kinds of embarrassment in the film's lines.
The first is to keep repeating or explaining the same meaning . For example, in the conversation between his parents and Billi, Billi has been asking various "silly questions", wondering why people choose not to tell grandma. This question appears repeatedly throughout the movie, and the answer everyone gives is almost the same every time. It becomes a little boring and meaningless when it grows. However, considering that most of the audience cannot speak Chinese, it is understandable to repeat the emphasis so that the audience can understand and follow the plot. It is a little deliberate, and it is always embarrassing to think of it.
The second kind of embarrassment is because of the character 's facial makeup . All characters, including Billi, created a very clear personality and consciousness when they first came up, so everyone’s lines must match their personalities, and the purpose of the lines is obvious. This part of the dialogue at the dinner table can be seen, Eastern and Western. , China, Japan, the United States, in order to highlight the differences, everyone is deliberately and clearly classified. If you remove the part of the family relationship, the character’s facial makeup is really serious. In the plot, who says what, what to do, what role does it play in the plot, and what thinking is caused, these are all established early, just like the above, some Deliberately, even suspected of opportunism.
It is calculated that the characterization of grandma is the most successful and sincere. The lines are less purposeful, not deliberate, and there are more details, whether it is easy-going jokes, personally organizing the wedding, or strong support. I don’t want to cause trouble for everyone, and tell everyone to throw her ashes into the sea. The character of grandma is vivid and full of emotion . The director has made the details to the fullest, and the camera can see the love, which is also the part that touches me the most in the whole film. .
My friend said that this kind of movie lines is actually not that important, mainly to provide a Chinese-speaking family environment and background. Director Wang Ziyi also said that he can't read and write Chinese, so it can be considered a challenge. All make sense, and I agree. I just think that when other conditions are good, the lines can be better, otherwise it would be a pity. In fact, the film's lines considered small, but I even think that some of the lines can be a little less, go beyond that is enough, or a little more fragmented lines, the purpose of some of the weaker sex will be better.
In any case, it is a good thing to have such a movie. I am very happy to see such a theme and content. It is a very beautiful and moving story, and it is also thought-provoking.
I like the ending very much. It’s not that grandma is regaining health and everyone is happy, nor is it that grandma is seriously ill and everyone is mourning. The ending does not have the sudden changes that ordinary movies of this type would design. The ending is very ordinary and ordinary, plain and flat, but full of power:
Billi returned to New York. She didn't know what would happen to grandma, but she couldn't stay. She had to continue her life, like each of us.
The last two shots are wonderful:
New York shouted loudly, disturbing Changchun Flying Bird .
At this point, the whole film is over.
During Q&A, the audience asked the director Wang Ziyi, asking: Once in the apartment in New York and once in Grandma's house in Changchun , what does the bird appearing twice represent?
Director Wang Ziyi replied that she knew that some film critics analyzed that the black bird represented death, but it didn't. She just wanted to express that sometimes there are many accidents, or coincidences, or just a detail in life, and when you notice it, it will make you feel like it.
I saw the bird twice, once in New York and once in Changchun. People who noticed it might also wonder: Is it the same bird? Why did the same bird appear so far apart?
People who have not noticed or are not interested will think: Hey, isn't it just two birds? One is in New York and the other is in Changchun.
Director Wang Ziyi said: Many things happen at the same time in life. There are big things and small things, and some things, if you believe in it, you will not work. It depends on whether you care or not, and it also depends on how everyone thinks about one thing. What this movie wants to show is how everyone sees things (perspective). Should I tell grandma? Everyone sees things differently. This difference in details is sometimes large and sometimes small, perhaps because of culture, or just because of the individual, there is no right or wrong, I just want to show the event itself.
Just like Billi's conversation with the hotel front desk, Billi replied: It's just different.
Finally, I will talk about a fun thing: when director Wang Ziyi was choosing the leading role, Awkwafina was only known for her music mv at that time. Someone recommended Awkwafina to director Wang Ziyi. Wang Ziyi was confused and asked, do you want to find someone who sings my vag to play me? ? So I am such a person in your eyes? ? ?
