The moment when human life is hanging by a thread

It's not a shocking change of 18 days or 28 days. This film is not a science fiction film, but it is indeed related to the destruction of mankind. It is about the most likely event in human history that is close to the edge of destruction-the Cuban Missile Crisis.

I think most Chinese people have heard of this name at least, and don't understand the seriousness of this incident, the cause, process, result and meaning.

Explain the background. In 1962, the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union was in full swing. Both sides have developed nuclear weapons that can destroy the world and intercontinental ballistic missiles that can reach each other's territory. However, due to the long distance between the two countries, the warning time for intercontinental missiles is quite long, and the other side has time to make countermeasures. When the two sides were at odds with each other, the Soviet Union made a major move by deploying a medium-range missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead in Cuba in the backyard of the United States. In this way, the nuclear bomb can reach Washington in 5 minutes. On the same day, the Sino-Indian border war broke out, which is also mentioned in the film.

The original Batista regime in Cuba was pro-American. Castro overthrew the regime and tried to maintain relations with the neighboring United States, but US President Eisenhower, who hated socialism and the Communist Party, rejected Cuba, blocked it and incited subversion. It can be said that the United States has its own responsibility for Cuba to fall to the Soviet Union.

Then talk about the missile crisis. The nuclear bomb that arrived in 5 minutes cannot be tolerated and accepted by the US government, but there have been serious disagreements within the US government on how to deal with this incident. And this film is mainly from the perspective of the United States to describe the development of this event. On the Soviet side, only the foreign minister, the ambassador to the United States, and the ambassador to the United Nations showed up. The Supreme Leader Khrushchev and the mysterious "hardliner" never appeared throughout, which also reflected the situation of Kennedy and others at that time.

There are three core characters appearing in this movie: US President John F. Kennedy, Special Assistant to the President Kenneth O'Donnell (the protagonist of the film, played by Kevin Costner), and Attorney General Robert Kennedy (the president's younger brother). In addition, the Vice President (Linden Johnson), the Secretary of State (responsible for foreign affairs and some internal affairs), the Secretary of Defense (civilian), the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the highest military position), the National Security Advisor, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations , CIA Director, Air Force Chief of Staff Li Mei (the loudest clamor for using force), etc. Military figures generally support air strikes and invasions, and use force to solve problems. However, as President of the United States, Kennedy understands that once force is used, World War III is inevitable, and the nuclear weapons possessed by the United States and the Soviet Union are sufficient to end human history.

Kennedy decided to adopt a compromise plan to block off the Cuban waters to prevent the Soviet Union from continuing to deliver weapons. The Soviet Union ignored the blockade and sent submarines to escort. US warships threw depth bombs on submarines without the President's authorization, but they did not know that these nuclear submarines carried nuclear missiles. The captain of the Soviet submarine, who was diving deep and unable to communicate with Moscow, thought that World War III had broken out, and decided to launch a nuclear bomb. However, it was not implemented because the chief mate insisted on opposing it (the Soviet submarine needed the unanimous consent of the captain, political commissar, and chief mate to launch a nuclear bomb). There was friction between the two sides in Cuban waters. A U.S. U-2 reconnaissance plane strayed into Soviet airspace, and the other was shot down in Cuba. At a time when people all over the world believe that the United States is bound to retaliate and a war is inevitable, the various internal forces of the United States and the Soviet Union are also tumbling on each other, and the fate of mankind is uncertain. This film tells the story of this climax of 13 days. In the end, Kennedy and Khrushchev withstood the pressure and, as rational and conscientious leaders, avoided the tragedy of human destruction.

The plot of the film is slightly different from the above-mentioned historical facts, because from the perspective of the United States, there is no description of the story of the Soviet submarine. There are also many political bridges interspersed in the film, and the conspiracy of one's own people and the enemy is layered on top of each other, adding to the layering of the film.

Generally speaking, there is such a shocking real event as a blueprint, just like the principle of "Bank Robbery", this film will not be ugly. When I look at it, I think every moment, this is a real thing that has happened before, and that human beings can still survive to this day thanks to the thoughts of these people. Of course, if it is a fictional theme, the shock will be greatly reduced.
