"The Great Debater", 8.2 points in the Golly Film Critic, 13 limit level.
Many years ago I liked to watch "Speech and Eloquence", and I was always envious when I saw people talking about it. So I followed the book to draw cats and tigers, and some logical reasoning syllogism, digging holes to induce stealing beams and changing posts, not to mention, it really works. I had the opportunity to be a salesperson. I thought I wanted to show my ambitions, but no one bought it. On the contrary, a bad-spoken teammate had a good performance. The reason is two words---wandering. This film tells the story of a university debate team. An excellent debater must not only have debating skills, profound knowledge, and rapid response, but also have the ability to control the inner world of the audience, that is, to walk. Heart. And a great debater must not only be mindful, but also be able to infiltrate the inner world of the audience, and then change the surrounding environment, and even change the world.
The film is based on a true story. The story takes place in the United States in 1935, more than two decades after Martin Luther King’s 1962 "I Have a Dream". There is serious racial discrimination in the United States. A black university professor in Texas formed a debate. The team argues against the universities. The focus of the story is not the debate itself, but the growth process of the students and the desire for equality and dignity brought about by inner maturity.
As far as the script is concerned, this is a highly completed work. The protagonists in it seem to have different experiences, but the director is accurate and edited properly; the seemingly loose plot is kept tightly on the theme, and in the final debate Concentrated outbreak, perfect ending.
Denzel Washington is a famous actor and starred in many wonderful movies. Hollywood is a well-deserved gold medal actor. But this "The Great Debater" is his own work. He is the screenwriter, director, and starring role. It is also exciting to think of other than the main business. The overall performance is excellent, and Denzel Washington naturally does not say that the other young actors are not inferior. Since 2007, they have been mixed in the show business.
There are a lot of wonderful lines in the movie, and sharing a few paragraphs as the end, this is not a spoiler.
"We have to do what we have to do so that we can do what we want to do."
"The slave trader told us: Let the slaves be physically strong and mentally weak, so that they will rely on you."
"An unjust law is no law"

The Great Debaters quotes

  • Melvin B. Tolson: Take the meanest, most restless nigger. Strip him of his clothes in front of the remaining male niggers, female niggers, and nigger infants, tar and feather him, tie each leg to a horse facing an opposite direction, set him on fire, and beat both horses until they tear him apart in front of male, female and nigger infants. Bullwhip and beat the remaining nigger males within an inch of their life. Do not kill them but put the fear of God in them, for they can be useful for future breeding. Anybody know who Willie Lynch was? Anybody? Raise your hand. No one? He was a vicious slave owner in the West Indies. The slave-masters in the colony of Virginia were having trouble controlling their slaves, so they sent for Mr. Lynch to teach them his methods. The word "lynching" came from his last name. His methods were very simple, but they were diabolical. Keep the slave physically strong but psychologically weak and dependent on the slave master. Keep the body, take the mind.

  • Henry Lowe: School's the only place you can read all day. Except prison.
