On the 17th, we had already participated in the official press conference. At that time, Luo gave very few words and said a sentence or two to the actor. He was a little worried about how the follow-up interview would be conducted, but after a separate chat or two, he relaxed and said These key director positions.
After the interview, I had a better understanding of this work, which took six years of preparation, shooting, and post-production, and I waited for the opportunity to watch the film again.

focus: Congratulations on bringing your work to Cannes again. Last night, you experienced the most important part of the film festival-Lumiere screening. Let the audience rewatch what it is like a feeling of? Is the audience's reaction similar to expectations?
Luo Hongzhen: Very good. The audience's reaction was similar to expectations. Although the audience's background was very different, I was surprised that most of the laughter could be passed on. I heard that the subtitle translation was relatively good.
Deep focus: Korean movies are not only in Asia, but as you can see this time, they are recognized worldwide. Among them, crime-themed works continue to emerge. Why do you think audiences continue to demand such movies? Have you ever understood consumer psychology? ?
Luo Hongzhen: I can't express for other directors and audiences, but at least I am interested in this kind of subject matter.
Deep Focus: Then you mentioned that you use "cries" to reflect the social atmosphere you feel. What kind of atmosphere do you feel?
Luo Hongzhen: The social atmosphere is not a phenomenon, it contains too many elements, and it is difficult to describe in a single word. However, I feel that the current society is worrying and there are many problems. This is why I pay attention to these topics.
Deep Focus: (Questions with spoilers) The ending of each of your movies is meaningful, and this time too, the father looks at his daughter at the end, feeling that even in a desperate environment, he must pass a trace of hope through family affection, whether it can be so understand?
Luo Hongzhen: There are similar considerations. I mainly want to give comfort. I think everyone can see that the father is doing his best in the film, but in life, things that backfire are everywhere. After some misfortune, some people have left. Some people have stayed. For those who have stayed, I would like to say that everyone has seen that you have done your best and that you are a good father, which can be regarded as comfort.
Deep Focus: From the previous realistic crime films of "The Yellow Sea" and "The Chaser", this time there are unrealistic elements such as demons and religion. Is there a special reason?
Luo Hongzhen: I thought about "how to commit a crime and how to be victimized?". There are answers to these questions, but this time I considered "Why does misfortune happen?" I want to ask "Why do some people experience misfortune? Why are those people instead of others?" It is difficult for me to get answers to these questions, and I can only try to answer them with the help of higher levels such as gods and religions.
Deep Focus: Curious about your personal words, do you believe in the existence of these supernatural or unknown forces? If so, which effects will be greater?
Luo Hongzhen: I believe it. Because I go to church, I have a tendency. I also have a more understanding of the filmmaking process, but it is also contradictory. I believe in religion, but at the same time I believe in the existence of many other gods.
Deep Focus: Are there special considerations for repeating the dining scene?
Luo Hongzhen: Actually it’s not a special consideration, it’s just a scene tool, but these scenes will be given different meanings. For example, the first dining scene is when someone in the village dies, or you can go after breakfast to show the original character’s personality characteristics. The scene of hyojin eating fish has another meaning.
Deep Focus: Regarding the casting of Qian Woo Hee, there is a big difference between this role and the very female role she played before. How did you choose it at that time?
Luo Hongzhen: In the preparation stage, I chose the shooting location and set it in Gucheng (the same sound as the cry in Korean), which has a unique scenery and atmosphere. (Spoiler is involved) For me, the role of Qian Yuxi in the film is a god, which can be a patron saint or a local deity. In Eastern beliefs, good and evil are not absolute. It must be combined with the characteristics of the local soil and water to express this divinity. Or spirituality, I think Qian Yuxi fits the characteristics of expressing such a changeable role.
Deep Focus: Thank you for sharing this film. Are you preparing for the next work?
Luo Hongzhen: No, there are some scattered ideas, but there is no overall idea yet.

deep focus: After experiencing the most important part of the film festival-Lumiere screening, how does it feel to watch it again with the audience? Is the audience's reaction similar to expectations?
Guo Duyuan: From the entrance to the big screen live broadcast, the audience applauded until they were seated, and then kept applauding at the end of the screening. These special experiences that other film festivals do not have are really touching. Senior Choi Min-sik and I are filming. He shared a similar experience when he participated in Cannes with "Old Boy". He said that being an actor would be an unforgettable experience. I don’t know what kind of experience it would be before. After this personal experience, It really makes me feel the pride of being a filmmaker, and I am really happy. The audience's reactions here will be diverse and intense. Generally, Korean audiences laugh at most, but during this screening, applauding and blowing the whistle are all direct and exciting.
Deep Focus: Kim Hwan Hee, who plays hyojin, has a very impressive acting skills. How do the two roles of father and daughter cooperate? Especially with actors of such a young age.
Guo Duyuan: Yes, I have cooperated with many young actors before, but Kim's acting skills are different this time. Compared with her age of 11, she is much more mature and deep. Sometimes even because of her amazing performances, I don’t need to work too hard. Some expressions and reactions are very natural, and she will often discuss the role with us adults, grasp the behavior and psychology of the role, from the role itself Set off, the performance method is amazingly mature. A French media said half-jokingly that although there will be no prizes for non-competitive units, at least special prizes should be given to her. Now, Kim in Korea is already a very hot topic. Guo Duyuan: Yes, Yes, that scene is what our crew is most worried about. In fact, there will be no nudity in the movie, let alone reveal to her, but I once asked in private "Do you know what you are talking about", she just kept silent I nodded, (said with a smile) I said this little girl was very precocious.
Deep focus: From the first half of the movie, the horror element has become more and more intense. How to make the adjustment of the characters and whether to shoot in chronological order?
Guo Duyuan: This is considered to be the difficulty of filming, because more than 80% of the scenes are outfield scenes. The principle of shooting under natural light is adhered to. It is closely related to whether it was sunny or cloudy at the time of shooting, whether it was raining or not. We have to follow the weather conditions. The sequence of shooting is adjusted at any time, with the addition of Japanese actors, and the schedule of Kunimura Hayabusa is considered, so it is possible to shoot in different conditions throughout the day, and it is not in order to shoot at all.
Deep Focus: (Questions with spoilers) At the end, when you find that your daughter killed your wife and mother-in-law, you look at your daughter with complicated emotions. What was your understanding of the character's mentality at that time?
Guo Duyuan: This situation is extreme. Besides, I don’t have a daughter. To be honest, it’s very difficult for me to understand the character. So the director and I really tried countless different ways of acting and kept trying the possibilities. In the end, I chose the most satisfactory performance. I think this is also the reason why the quality of Korean movies can continue to improve. We really tried many times.

Qian Yuxi: I have always wanted to experience it. I thought it was the most authoritative film festival before, so it would be very serious and a little heavy. But when I arrived at the scene, I found it very enjoyable. When I watched it last night, the audience encouraged the crew through a long time. The applause expresses that the scene is very moving, and being able to feel the audience's reflection in real time is a wonderful feeling for the actors. When Korean audiences watch it, they won’t applaud because they are good-looking, they booed directly when they are not good-looking, and they will watch it calmer, so it’s not easy to know the audience’s feelings.
Deep Focus: Do Korean viewers go back and comment online?
Qian Yuxi: (laughs) How do you know? ! That's right, that's right.
Deep Focus: You think the role this time is quite different from the role you played before. Why did the director choose you?
Qian Yuxi: I don't know what the director thinks, but I am not that easy to get nervous. Although everyone knows the reputation of Director Luo, he is a director who does not compromise, pursues perfection, and is very demanding on actors, but when facing the director when auditioning, I did not feel any pressure, and the performance was relatively natural. Maybe it is.
Deep Focus: Actually, I just asked the director a similar question. His answer is because he feels that you can express the patron saint, the local god, this kind of abstract feeling, so he will consider you
Qian Yuxi: (surprised) the director has never been direct Tell me the reason, this is the first time I heard it. But after I got the script, I thought that the character was not human, but close to gods, so when the director had the same understanding of the character, the filming scene did not require a lot of communication, and some followed intuition.
Deep Focus: There are not many scenes this time, but the role is very important. How to interpret this role among these powerful male stars?
Qian Yuxi: There was a lot of pressure on this at the beginning, because the role did not have any reference to the previous experience, and I tried different types, but I was not very satisfied. Later, I didn’t think much about it. When I arrived at the scene, I used the atmosphere at the time to perform intuitively, and I felt that the effect was good. A lot, this is the first time this method of performance has been adopted.
Deep Focus: Just now Guo Duyuan mentioned that every scene has been shot many times. What is your experience?
Qian Yuxi: Actually, my experience will be different from that of the predecessors, because my scenes are all happening in Magic Hour, that is, special moments such as sunset and rising, so I have never had the opportunity to try many performances. This requires me to be highly concentrated during the performance. This helped the character.
Deep Focus: You have appeared in a lot of popular movies, such as "Sunshine Sisters", "Mother", "Princess Han", and then to this "Cry", why do you think you have so many great works?
Cheon Woo Hee: In fact, just like other places, there are relatively few opportunities for female characters in Korean movies, but I was able to participate in so many movies. At first, it was inseparable from luck. After I seized the opportunity through luck, I was recognized for my dedication. , I can gradually release more scripts. I chose the scripts based on intuition. The more I read, the more accurate I feel.
Deep Focus: Can you briefly talk about Director Feng Junhao and Director Luo Hongzhen?
Qian Yuxi: We have heard a lot of comments comparing the two directors and the film after the release, but we didn't realize that the audience would associate before, because as the main participant, we experienced the filming process and the requirements and goals of the two directors. It is very different, so the feeling is also very different.
Deep Focus: What are the feelings of actresses in the Korean film industry?
Chin Woo Hee: The common problem is that there are not many good female roles, and there are many restrictions. Because of the commercial nature, the roles tend to be typified and lack diversity. I think I was lucky to choose different types of roles. The more I try new types, the more I enjoy the challenge.

Qian Yuxi: Yes, I am currently shooting a new film directed by Lee YoonKi with Kim NamGil.
