This story is much faster-paced than "The Nameless Girl", and it came out 3 years earlier than the latter, and for me it was a day late watching the gap, so when I was reminiscing about "Two Days and One Night", I had a clearer memory of "The Nameless Girl".
For the beginning of the story, if you compare it with "The Nameless Girl", it will have a different meaning. Some people say that "The Nameless Girl" was a failure, and the live screening at Cannes was not good. My judgment is that something went wrong at the beginning of the story. The beginning of "The Nameless Girl" shows several doctor-patient plots, some of which seem to be off-topic, while the first scene of the story of "Two Days and One Night" throws out problems, the dilemma faced by the heroine (Marion) and Depression symptoms are clearly explained, and then directly enter the question. It can be said that few of Darney's stories are so concentrated around the theme, and they are all idle writing with a certain amount of space. Welding, carpentry, doctor's diagnosis, waffle making... The characters are serious and accurate in all occupations. This may be the reason why the Darney brothers take realism as the fundamental reason. Each occupation is accurate, detailed and natural. won the favor of the audience.
In the first shot of "Two Days and One Night", Marion Cotillard's acting skills have conquered me. Usually, there are three common diseases in domestic dramas that can induce OCD in me: the characters sleeping, eating and driving.
Chatting while driving, looking at each other with a smile, the dialogue is not finished, just don’t look at the road conditions; when eating, maybe worry about making up, maybe the props for filming are not fragrant enough, the actor Sven’s teeth are missing, every bite is mostly “chopsticks sandwiching rice grains” The rhythm of you, I take one bite, only talking but not eating, looking completely lost my appetite. Look at sleep again. Everyone who loves beauty before going to bed removes their makeup, but the actor just put on makeup and jumped into bed. The director immediately called to start filming, and there was no entry process. The actor's small chest panted, his eyes rolled in his eyelids, and the arteries of his heart and neck were beating against each other. Wait patiently for the actor's state, remember the good habit of a European director, never begrudge the film before shooting, and roll it for a while before the performance begins.
Back to the first scene of Marion in "Two Days and One Night", sleep. Her breathing was slow and her eyes remained motionless for dozens of seconds, until the relentless ringing of the phone woke her up. In all the works of the Darney brothers, almost no matter the light and tone, they rarely use the soundtrack to make a sensation, and even make-up and costumes are often skipped, but they pay great attention to the details of the performance. I have been trying to figure this out. How much influence did the previous documentary work experience have on them?
If "The Nameless Girl" is too idle to affect the narrative, "Two Days and One Night" is the other extreme, and each scene revolves around the theme.
No matter what narrative method the Darney brothers try, their range of topics remains the same. Belgium, the blue-collar life at the bottom, where the protagonists often encounter moral dilemmas that conflict with their vital interests, explore survival and human nature in such an atmosphere . The effect must be the best, but the premise is that the judgment of life and human nature is accurate, and the typicality of the event.
Masters are people too. When you find that the idols in our hearts are also negligent and make mistakes, you will feel a little regret, and at the same time, you will be happy and relieved - the great directors and screenwriters are also human, and you still have a chance to catch up (at least psychologically confidence in yourself).
In the third act of "Two Days and One Night", the most important turning point, there is an abnormal place. The heroine Marion took a large amount of pills in the bathroom, and she calmly put the cup away and put the empty pill box back. At this time, a colleague suddenly came and told her that she would vote for her on Monday. A sudden turn of events occurred at the time of the desperate suicide. At this time, at this time, she only paused for a moment and said calmly to her husband: I took the medicine.
In my opinion, staying here is too abrupt, calm, and contrary to the common sense of human behavior. Just imagine a depressed patient. In extreme despair, after she has failed all her efforts, she is extremely desperate and can be calm, but the sudden turn of events should bring joy and sadness, and a sudden outbreak of broadcast. No matter how calm she is, it makes no sense. Extreme despair, and a sudden hope, will she not collapse? After all, this is to end life, to give up, to give up everything in the world, lover, child... This kind of sharp turning backlog of energy is an outlet that needs to be released. Faced with heavy pressure, everyone will collapse.
But the heroine of "Two Days and One Night" did not. Her husband took her to the pool to induce vomiting. Perhaps, the Darney brothers have gone through all kinds of worlds, their world view is too old-fashioned, their understanding is too detached, and they have become numb and indifferent. But my generation always felt that the heroine had to take a breath, let the audience sigh, and take a breath for a moment. Easier said than done. The flaws do not hide the beauty.
