the great debater

Watching the film today trains the great debater. Of course, there is no doubt that this is a very serious film, which shows people the way of democratic life and the process of democratic activities in detail and vividly. I remembered the Simpson six-hour documentary I watched not long ago, and then watched Wiley College's defense at Harvard, and I fell into an endless loop of relativism. In fact, the fourteen-year-old Xiao Fa Mo's final speech was simple and natural, ending only with a calm statement of facts and a light questioning, which is a lethal weapon to defeat his opponent. As they had rehearsed before, the seniors told everyone to "speak the truth." What facts? The fact that white people gathered to lynch black people. Since then, as long as this terrible fact is stated, logic and analysis are no longer necessary. What is "facts speak louder than eloquence"? That is, if the facts are too shocking to the civilized world, conscience becomes the dominant force, and eloquence is sinful, so how could the trophy for the debate competition not be given to Wiley College? There is absolutely no objection to the moral judgment, a proposition that can no longer be asked, cannot be explored, and cannot be explored in the course of democracy. Reason hits the rocks here, and any remaining voices become the new immorality. Yes, they won as long as they were black and just told the truth, they didn't really need to debate. However, the result? When I was young, I always thought that the problem only needs to be revealed and discussed, and the other way is to cover up, and cover up means sin. Today I sometimes think: maybe it's not a cover up, but a shelving. Democracy is sometimes like a clockwork machine. Once it is activated, it will never allow disputes to be put aside. Once the jurisdiction is handed over to God, the "absolute" will be vacated, and "suspension" will become a structural The reason is, and the result is that such defenses become the trump card for lawyers to win the case, and the question itself is permanently put on hold on the "unsleepable" agenda.

The Great Debaters quotes

  • Melvin B. Tolson: Take the meanest, most restless nigger. Strip him of his clothes in front of the remaining male niggers, female niggers, and nigger infants, tar and feather him, tie each leg to a horse facing an opposite direction, set him on fire, and beat both horses until they tear him apart in front of male, female and nigger infants. Bullwhip and beat the remaining nigger males within an inch of their life. Do not kill them but put the fear of God in them, for they can be useful for future breeding. Anybody know who Willie Lynch was? Anybody? Raise your hand. No one? He was a vicious slave owner in the West Indies. The slave-masters in the colony of Virginia were having trouble controlling their slaves, so they sent for Mr. Lynch to teach them his methods. The word "lynching" came from his last name. His methods were very simple, but they were diabolical. Keep the slave physically strong but psychologically weak and dependent on the slave master. Keep the body, take the mind.

  • Henry Lowe: School's the only place you can read all day. Except prison.
