"Jackie" is a documentary biography filmed by Chilean director Pablo Laraine, which tells the life and psychological state of President Kennedy's wife Jacqueline Kennedy before and after his assassination in Dallas. As for the content of the film itself, we don't have much to discuss. It is a documentary film that uses the film platform to put the image of the President's wife, which we cannot understand, into the public's field of vision. It restores some historical facts, and is limited by the review conditions of the film censorship unit. Finally, coupled with the director's own views on history and subjective assumptions, the film was finally pushed to the Oscar stage.
The film was so unremarkable when it first came out that the high praise from the Toronto Film Festival finally put it back on the track of a successful movie, and even got an Oscar nomination, which is evident from the high evaluation. Looking at the winners who have shined on the Oscar stage in the past, either the content of the film is novel and the brain is wide open, such as "Inception", "Avatar", "Interstellar" ; or the content is mellow and delicate, such as "The Godfather". "The Silence of the Lambs" series; if you only talk about documentary films, there are also good films such as "Schindler's List", "General Patton" and "Citizen Kane" . In terms of the content of the film alone, "The First Lady" is difficult to reach the level of the Oscars. But the smart Pablo Laraine found Natalie Portman, her superb interpretation and unparalleled intellectual temperament will be the vivid interpretation of the image of the first lady.
Natalie Portman is featured in almost every shot throughout the film, immersed in her own sad and contradictory world. In the film, she has many different styles of clothing, which caused a strong stimulation to the visual senses, which reminded me of the scenes in "Heroes" where the background colors are constantly changing. Secondly, the soundtrack of the movie is very good, mainly to suppress sadness and slowness, a bit like the clip of the "Interstellar" spaceship sailing in the universe. The director generously gave Natalie Portman plenty of close-up shots to capture every change of expression on her face.
Natalie Portman doesn't look like Jacqueline Kennedy, but the close-up focuses on her sadness and firmness, vulnerability and strength after losing her husband in the film, and vividly interprets the voice and body language of the first lady came out. The film could not be nominated for Best Picture, but it was favored by awards for Best Actress, Best Original Score, and Best Costume Design. This is not just a biography, it is more like an elegy. The phrase "one person supports a play" is well confirmed in this film.
In my humble opinion, "The First Lady" is a mediocre documentary biopic, but an extraordinary psychological drama.
