Picking up in the morning and evening---Rereading Butterfly Dream

In the early years, I saw the movie Butterfly Dream, which left only the impression of a woman in black and a series of gloomy and restless images. The sky was dark and there were few bright colors. In the novel, there are large sections of the heroine's psychological ups and downs, and large sections of scenery descriptions. It's hard to read in full. Recently, I listened to the novel completely from Himalaya, and I have many new insights. There are many factors that affect marriage. Marriage success is the result of a combination of many factors. Although the matching of external conditions is important, compatibility and love are the core. The protagonist Maxim's grandmother said that Rebecca had all the conditions for a high-society wife, beauty, grace, and talent. Maxime, the owner of the estate, was very attracted and married Rebecca. But their dispositions are too different. Maxim is a traditional British gentleman with a rigid life. Outside the management manor, meals are served at a fixed time and routine every day. After dinner, read newspapers and write letters in the reading room. Years have been like one day; and Rebecca is warm, sociable, and likes to hang out and be in the limelight. There is a huge disparity between the two people. We have seen Downton Abbey, and the ancient manor is far away from the bustling city. If you can't be peaceful, willing to appreciate the beautiful natural scenery, like reading, hunting, etc., it's really not easy to endure loneliness. Rebecca is very different from the main character. Even if she wasn't that bad, it would be hard for their marriage to be harmonious. However, although the later heroine was much younger than the male protagonist, she had never seen the world and was shy. But she has a similar spirit to Maxim. Tranquil, full of fantasy, like reading and painting, are all words that can be done in the manor. They are a very suitable couple to grow old. In addition, the female protagonist loves the male protagonist deeply. At first, she secretly fell in love (with joy and pain), and when she knew that the male protagonist married her, she was unbelievably pleasantly surprised. Later, even if I heard that he was a murderer, I could believe him and fight side by side with him to get through the difficulties. In the end, the male protagonist lost the manor and most of his property. He could not live and work in peace and contentment. He could only keep on traveling and travel to hotels in various places. At this time, the heroine can always accompany, be considerate, and comfort the hero. Just imagine, if there is no deep love, it is absolutely difficult for the heroine to have no complaints and no regrets, and be as considerate as ever. The road of life is really long and hard, and no one is always the darling of fate. Wealth may be lost, beauty is gradually lost, only love and acquaintance can support a pair of strange men and women to pass the test of stormy seas and endure the trivialities of chicken feathers. And regardless of honor or disgrace, we will spend the long days hand in hand day after day. When choosing a marriage partner, look past the surface and listen to your true inner voice.

[2] The atmosphere in the first half is quite good, and the plight of the heroine makes people curious. But the second half suddenly diverted attention, and the plot shifted to the cause of Rebecca's death, so the story was divided into two paragraphs, and the ending was hastily ended, laying the groundwork for the predicament of the first half.

The rhythm is very fast, which can make people feel happy and nervous. It still feels like a big studio film similar to "Gone with the Wind" and "Blue Bridge", but Hitchcock just added his own suspense to it. The atmosphere and the result of the combination are also very good. It is not a top Hitchcock movie, but it is still a beautiful romance, but Joan Fontaine is a little too restrained in it.

Rebecca quotes

  • Mrs. Danvers: [brings out a negligee from under the bedcovers] Did you ever see anything so delicate?

[motions the second Mrs. de Winter over]

Mrs. Danvers: Look, you can see my hand through it!

  • Mrs. Danvers: [just as the second Mrs. de Winter reaches for the door] You wouldn't think she'd been gone so long, would you? Sometimes, when I walk along the corridor, I fancy I hear her just behind me. That quick light step, I couldn't mistake it anywhere. It's not only in this room, it's in all the rooms in the house. I can almost hear it now.

[turns to the petrified second Mrs. de Winter]

Mrs. Danvers: Do you think the dead come back and watch the living?

The Second Mrs. de Winter: [sobbing] N-no, I don't believe it.

Mrs. Danvers: Sometimes, I wonder if she doesn't come back here to Manderley, to watch you and Mr. de Winter together. You look tired. Why don't you stay here a while and rest, and listen to the sea? It's so soothing. Listen to it.

[turning away towards the window as the second Mrs. de Winter slips out the door]

Mrs. Danvers: Listen. Listen to the sea.
