2018 / Mexico United States / Drama Family / Alfonso Cuaron / Yalitza Aparicio Marina de Tavira

Alfonso Cuaron once again amazes us and his films never disappoint.

Cleo, an ordinary and kind maid, works as a maid in a family of six. The male host is away for a long time, and the hostess takes care of the four children at home. The hostess, who has been separated from her husband for a long time, has a temperamental temperament, and she also yelled at Kleo. The identities and status of the two women are very different, but they have experienced the same hardships. Kerio was abandoned by the "Martial Man" after she became pregnant, and the hostess's husband cheated on her by going to Quebec on a business trip, in fact, to stay away from her and live with his mistress. Women start to grow strong in the face of innocent children. Like the she-wolf who rescued the founder of the city of Rome, Corio, who can't swim, rescued the hostess's two children from the sea. They hug each other tightly, and no one can leave the other...

The original Kelio was just an innocent and kind maid, she gave everything she had to take care of her four children. She worked hard every day and night without shedding a single tear. In the face of the hostess' scolding, she still worked diligently and took care of the children wholeheartedly. Ke Leo is taciturn, no one knows Ke Leo's mind whether it is facing the child or the employer. After giving birth to the stillborn, Cleo remained silent, just working. It wasn't until they hugged on the beach at the end that Kleo really revealed his heart. At this time, they were one and there was no distance.

The hostess was once a biochemist who sacrificed her career for the family and devoted herself to taking care of the children and husband. The husband's long absence from home makes the hostess very lonely and lacks love. She would be irritable at times because her husband was always away, and she would sometimes get mad at Cleo. But she revealed kindness in her bones. After Keleo became pregnant, she helped her as soon as possible, contacted the doctor for her, and bought a crib for her child. Because she is also a woman, she can understand Kleo's pain. Later, she sold her husband's car and decided to go back to work and live again, telling her children that they were going to start a new life and forget about the dog man who hurt her deeply.

The hostess confesses to the children

"Roma" is a realistic female-themed film. From the perspective of a maid, the film tells the story of women's love and survival. Alfonso's portrayal of female characters is very meticulous, and Leo's every move, every word and word is a symbol of her diligence and simplicity. Compared to the "martial arts man" who escaped, Kleo did her best to complete her work until the child was born, taking care of the master's children. The director even recorded the whole process of Kelio's childbirth, and tension and pain permeated from invisible. The screams in the delivery room and Ke Leo's helpless farewell to her daughter all imply that women are both strong and fragile, expressing the indescribable helplessness of women. Such an experience will never be understood by a man in his entire life.

Corio says goodbye to her daughter

The entire film "Roma" was shot in black and white, and the lens was mostly from a public perspective, with few close-ups of the protagonist in the crowd. This way of shooting reflects the face of Mexican society and the turbulent situation at that time. The gunshots sounded, the gunshots fell, the men fell in the pool of blood, and the women who hugged them and cried bitterly, the helpless women. In the face of the turbulent society, women seem to be incompetent animals, but behind it are their hard work, unrepentant labor and helpless pleas.

What deserves credit is the director's portrayal of male characters in the film. They were disheveled and looked ridiculous. "Martial arts man" thinks that he is performing wonderful martial arts, but he is just playing tricks with shower curtain rods. Embarrassment and sarcasm were displayed as much as possible from Corio's expression. In pursuit of his love for luxury cars, the vain host drives a car that can't even enter the house, smoking and posing while smoking. It's no wonder that such a wise man is the only one who steps on shit every time. Even more hilarious is the scene where the martial arts master leads people to group exercises, and he looks very much like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in tights and an eye patch (that's his fashion choice). Using simple movements to promote his magic, in fact, such movements can be done just like Kleo who has never practiced.

Kelio was embarrassed after watching the performance of "Martial Arts Man"

Such sarcasm really deserves full marks. Many men are vain and naive and have no sense of responsibility. They only use physical strength to suppress women, but their social status is still higher than that of men. How ironic! "Roma" shows the audience the strength of women. In this world ruled by big pig trotters, women can still live independently and refuse the harassment of perverted men. The founder of the city of Rome was raised by a she-wolf, which reflects the meaning of women in today's society, which many men have long ignored.

I, who have never liked black and white movies, became a fan of "Roma" today. It is no wonder that such a masterpiece is praised by the public. Alfonso once again proved himself to the international film circle that he is a well-deserved artist!
