The director tries to connect three stories with a killer and three thieves as clues: a couple who fight all day. A pair of lovers who cannot satisfy each other. A seemingly peaceful and ordinary family.
first story. When the killer hired by the husband kills his wife in reality, the smile and mouth of the wife before her death make the husband understand that, whether in life or spirit, he is more dependent on his wife than he thought.
Carefully recall the details of the past, from the three meals a day on weekdays; the wife's painstaking efforts to change her outfit and the means of arguing when the two fought, the revengeful super-sweet coffee with resentment, the romantic candles and Decorations, etc... You can see a key message that the director wants to convey, that is, the wife who understands life better is the wife who looks expressionless all day in the eyes of her husband. So when he dug up the cemetery to confirm that his wife was really dead, he chose to commit suicide by jumping off the building without any suspense.
The second story, although the way it is narrated is a bit confusing, but the girlfriend's feminism is still reflected in the film. Just because of sexual dissatisfaction and her boyfriend's cheating behavior buy murder. The lack of self-confidence in Japan's completely male-dominated workplace has led to her extreme arrogance and difficulty accepting criticism from others. So when the source of her self-confidence, the tape recorder (in fact, the creativity recorded in the tape recorder is also confusing) was lost, her arrogance suffocated like a deflated inflatable doll.
The third story I personally think is the most exciting. It can be said that most middle-aged people who are in a mid-life crisis can understand it better.
When the hypnotist performed the operation, the man's eyes at that moment might mean that he was not really hypnotized. To emphasize this point, the director gave the same look to the cabinet when the three thieves appeared in his house. Therefore, it is impossible for anyone to wake up a person who is pretending to be asleep. As a result, the husband's transformation into a bird has become a natural excuse and means for him to escape from reality. The image of the bird man is also obvious, and its symbolic meaning is naturally free to soar after breaking free from the siege.
The film's expression method draws on Kafka's novel "The Metamorphosis", but the narrative angle is still different, and the society shows its indifference without any suspense. The strange eyes and words of relatives, the hilarious attitude of doctors, and the research of scientists without any sympathy all reveal this. But fortunately, the director does not seem to be completely disappointed with this indifferent society. In the end, the scene of his son playing with the bird boy was preserved. It can be seen that he still put his hope on the children who have not been polluted by the world. This is both a helplessness and a hope.
As for the ending Bird Man took the man to fly, personal understanding may be just a hint. It implies that only death can get the freedom to soar in the sky.
Overall, this is a movie worth watching. But from the point of view of the way of narration, it is far worse than Secular Fiction. The series of plots is not smooth enough, and the logic of some plot connections is still too reluctant. If only from the perspective of three short stories. In addition to the confusing second story, the other two are worth pondering and exploring.
Like my title, people fleeing from the world often turn themselves into ghosts and fantasize about the darker side. But when the reality of the fantasy really comes, it may be when the darkness is illuminated. The moment has come, and the ghosts will be mercilessly killed by the sun at the same time!
