Leaving aside the political nature of the U.S. military campaign against Iraq, the entire film is full of humanity in every detail, from the female officer who cleans up the soldier's remains to the captain who escorts the soldier's remains home, and every one of them. A staff member or fellow passers-by who participated in the return of the soldier's remains sincerely expressed their respect for the captain and their deep condolences to the deceased soldier. During this journey, we have seen all kinds of shining points of human nature, as well as the manifestations of life. The lofty respect shown, a nation naturally has a reverence for life, and that is the foundation of its strength.

Taking Chance quotes

  • 1st Lt. Dan Robertson (Chance Phelp's platoon commander): [voiceover, from his 09 April 2004 letter to the Phelps family] It's ironic, but I am certain that if the world had more men like Chance Phelps, there wouldn't be a need for a Marine Corps.

  • LtCol Mike Strobl: [voiceover] Chance Phelps was wearing his St. Christopher medal when he was killed on Good Friday. Eight days later, I handed the medallion to his mother. I watched them carry him the final fifteen yards. I felt that as long as he was still moving, he was somehow still alive. When they put him down in his grave, he'd stopped moving. I didn't know Chance Phelps before he died. But today, I miss him.
