This is not a movie review, it's a personal opinion
A Netflix film, the story is about a father-son reconciliation journey.
The relationship between the male protagonist and his father has always been bad, and he has not spoken for more than ten years. But his father was dying, and his only wish before his death was to develop some film that could never be developed again (times changed, old film was eliminated), so he hoped to go to a place 2,000 miles away with his son. In fact, what this old man wanted most was to reconcile with his son before he died.
The son agreed to the trip under his personal interests. During this trip, he learned about his father and slowly fulfilled his father's last wish.
Just talk about his father. His father was indeed a jerk, he admitted it himself, and he didn't dare to face his true thoughts until the last moment. For example, he is reconciling with his son, why not say it directly? It wasn't until at the end that he fainted, and he realized more clearly that his life was about to end, and he wept bitterly and said what was in his heart. Open up opportunities for reconciliation.
And some of the son's knowledge of his father is incomplete. His father may be weird, in his eyes, a bastard that the whole world hates. But in the end, he found out that in the photography circle, his father gained a lot of respect with his work. Some people even inspired themselves indirectly because of their father's works. This doesn't fit the image of a "jerk".
This father has his own strange values, such as his saying that happiness is the most beautiful myth of the 20th century. We can't say it's wrong, pessimistic and optimistic, some people are just extremely pessimistic and build their values on pessimism and find their own life. As long as he doesn't suffer, only he knows that.
This father, I personally think, is a man who loves life. He shoots whatever he sees. Like the little girl in the station wagon. But life is not just happy, there are also sadness, pain, despair, etc. If a person loves life, he should not be "picky", should not only want the happiness in life and avoid the pain in life. (So he also went to shoot Afghanistan).
In life, we will inevitably encounter various places that make us dissatisfied. How do we accept them?
Just like the male protagonist, if you don't accept that your father is indeed a "jerk", you will lose the valuable side of your father.
Only by accepting it can we reconcile with life.
