I believe that people who have read other comments have generally understood the background of this story: Tom's girlfriend Gerri was killed in a car accident. Tom is schizophrenic in his grief, imagines his girlfriend is still alive and helps him get back on his feet. What many people dispute is whether the homeless Migg really exists, and also gave the screenwriter's interpretation that Migg exists, etc...
However, there are a few points that have almost never been mentioned. It is these points that add to the tragedy of the play. It's these points that remind us that this is always a Tom and Gerri story.
The beginning of the story foreshadows, Gerri doesn't like Tom saying the word homeless. Tom has a job he doesn't like but supports his family, while Gerri has been out of work for five months.
Then it was Tom sending Gerri out, but it instantly turned into a phone call to Gerri, and then Migg returned the wallet for the first time.
Migg does exist, as you can see from here. Tom didn't understand Migg's name at first, and it sounded like Mick. It is impossible for a character in fantasy to correct you his name. When Tom invited Migg into the house, he wanted to give Migg 30 yuan, and finally gave two 20s; if it was just to send homeless people, one 20 would be fine. My understanding is: what Tom said at first, thought it was the pizza delivery man, was actually real, the pizza cost 30 yuan, and the two 20 he gave was to pay for the pizza. Since he associates the two g's in Migg's name from the two coins, he confuses Migg with a pizza delivery man.
But did Migg really enter Tom's house? I tend to think it's true. One proof is that the mirror on the wall reflects Migg's back the first time he enters the door, and Tom even has his back to him. As some analysts say, Gerri was never in the mirror. Mirrors reflect reality.
And Tom and Migg didn't remember everything after they started drinking until they woke up the next morning, maybe he was drunk and poured out his heart to Migg, and then gave Migg a chance.
1. Migg was sitting on the sofa smoking a cigarette. The camera instantly changed to Tom smoking on the bed. Then Gerri came in and asked him to go to work. Tom satirized Gerri as a homeless man and claimed that he went to the theater to act. I went to Tom's house and asked him to borrow money.
This was Tom's worst quarrel with Gerri since his fantasies began, so it must have been on his mind.
Because it's true.
Because in his mind, that's what caused Gerri's accident.
Let's go back to the beginning (note that Gerri was dead at the time, so this conversation is Tom's imagination, not a mere memory), Gerri hadn't gotten a new job for five months, and was going to audition for a show to star in "Sloppy" The old maid", mentioning that "beggars are not qualified to be picky", while Tom pointed to the homeless outside and said "no one can see him, how can he beg". Does it mean the same thing as actors pick and choose where no one can see her? And when Gerri said "maybe waiting for someone," he actually meant that he was waiting for a better character (of course, not waiting).
What actually happened, most likely, Gerri didn't go to work because of the requirements for the role, Tom satirized that Gerri didn't get the show for five months and looked like a sloppy old maid (and what we saw Gerri was quite amazing, because That was the best of her in Tom's heart), and said she was like a beggar tramp. These remarks lead Gerri to insist on auditioning alone, which ends up in a car accident on the way. Tom deeply blamed himself, only to fall into schizophrenia.
And our Tom, remembering that he also has a dream of a writer in his heart, and after Gerri's death, he realized the preciousness of dreams - Gerri will never have the chance to fulfill her dream of playing an important role. At this moment, Gerri, his split personality, reminds him that he still has a chance to return to work, while the other he tells himself that those are too naive and that being a writer is what matters. His "degeneration" came from his dream of succeeding his girlfriend to complete his life. The appearance of the homeless is just a fuse...
Note that after Migg became a part of Tom's life, Tom was actually aware of Gerri's absence most of the time. It's just that every time Gerri showed up, he lied to himself that he was just shooting.
2. The kitchen was full of bowls. At this time, Tom and Migg were arguing. Migg asked him to wash the dishes. Tom said that Migg had never washed the dishes and was a stinky homeless person. Migg said he had no right to judge himself. Is this scene familiar? Does it seem like a quarrel between boyfriends and girlfriends happens at any time?
What actually happened might be: Tom remembered his quarrel with his girlfriend over housework. That's why she showed such a painful expression. It can be seen that Tom's accusation of his girlfriend not working is not a day or two, but that any little thing can cause it. These all became the source of his self-blame later.
3. Tom's Awakening.
Tom received a phone message that the power company had notified him of the power outage, and it was clearly 18:00 pm. As soon as I hung up, the power went out and Migg showed up right away.
At this time, Migg said that the bathroom was running water and went to check. It's suspicious here because it's unlikely that Tom will suddenly remember to take a shower or give Migg some water. But in the end Migg did drown again.
Gerri walked in immediately, Tom cried and said he missed her, and said he wanted to write a play for her to star in. At this time, it was Tom's inner call, he wanted to give everything to get Gerri back, he wanted to get it back their first dream.
At this point, Gerri tells Tom that he is not a writer's material, and brings him back to reality, even Gerri himself is ready to rehearse for a role she doesn't like. Then Tom killed Migg and washed himself seriously. (It's a bit buggy here, because if Migg drowned then Gerri would have no place to take a shower. So I don't think it's as simple as it seems. When Migg and Tom confrontation, you can hear the sound of water dripping from the tap, I think the director is in There is absolutely no messing around here, there must be something to refer to)
4. The return of Gerri.
It can be seen from the visit of colleagues later that the power has not been restored, but in Tom's imagination, Gerri has returned, the room is bright and the refrigerator is working normally. Gerri tells a funny story about the audition (failed), and Tom watches it all with a smile. It was the life he wanted most, and he thanked the imaginary Gerri for getting him back on track. Until a colleague found Migg's body, Tom still believed that Gerri was still making coffee for him in the kitchen (it was obviously out of power).
Tom will never get back on track. He might end up in a mental prison.
But, in his world, Gerri was already with him, never apart.
