The vast universe is absurd

"Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody is gonna die. Come watch TV.".

The fact that we are all going to die one day; that the universe is so big and nothing in it matters.
Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody is gonna die. Come watch TV.

There is an interesting metaphor in "Sophie's World" that people are nothing but a slapper on a big rabbit's fluff. Death is the least fuss-free thing in the universe, just like the gunman in "Three-Body Problem" shooting a target at a distant stake, everything is so random here. And as the message of existential drama: Life is essensially absurd. Essentially absurd and meaningless. Each episode pays homage to one or some sci-fi works or concepts, and it's not surprising that the storyline is framed. However, it is interesting in that it is dressed in a sci-fi coat, but in fact explores human nature and the philosophical value of human existence in a very dark and humorous way. In a way, this is really a relief for us who are "suffering in life". "I'm in great pain, please help me" behind the grotesque mantra is the deepest fear of death. The form is extremely comical, but the reality is pessimistic; the brushstrokes are extremely cold, but heartwarming. There's a "see through this fucking damn world, but still love it" feeling. Laugh at the insignificance of human beings, but deeply pity this insignificance.

In the episode of S1's Body Park, the deaths of the supporting characters were as usual and even comical as a sneeze. Deaths, marital feuds, sexual assault of boys, extramarital sex, fetishes, all these unacceptable incidents are played out in minutes with American humour and blazingly fast. Enough to make several Japanese ethics films (laughs) There is nothing new under the sun, everything is routine. Jerry said "Enjoy being human", but those are exactly what being human means. Hegel said that all things must go to their opposite. Having watched a lot of Japanese and Korean dramas about delicate ethics and human nature, I think Rick and Morty's style of escaping irony is really charming that makes people want to swear. Expressing grief with grief is the most superficial, and expressing grief with nothing may be profound, but if you can express grief with joy, it is really a kind of penetrating wisdom, and it is the highest level. Quoting a friend's evaluation of this animation "so damn good, and so stupidly smart".

Two personal favorite episodes: S2E3 (Unity), S3E7 (president Morty). Also like two episodes: Do you feel it; For the damaged coda. It's a masterpiece.

The Rickshank Rickdemption quotes

  • Rick Sanchez: [as Leader of the Citadel of Ricks] Operating an unregistered portal gun, radicalizing a Summer, conspiring with a traitorous Rick. How do you plead?

Morty Smith: How is this a fair trial? O-Our lawyer is a Morty.

    [Lawyer Morty is goofing around]

Rick Sanchez: [as Leader of the Citadel of Ricks] It's not fair, you have no rights, and he's not a lawyer. We just keep him here because he's fun. Look at him go.

Morty Smith: [as Lawyer Morty; mindlessly] Ha ha! Yeah!

Rick Sanchez: [as Leader of the Citadel of Ricks; to Summer and Morty] We'll be lenient on you if you renounce your Rick. What say you, Summer?

Summer Smith: I say fuck you! My grandpa was my hero. You killed him because you were jealous of him. That's pretty obvious from the haircuts. So do what you want to me, but let my brother go. He already renounced Rick.

Rick Sanchez: [as Leader of the Citadel of Ricks] Morty?

Morty Smith: [Morty is being bothered by Lawyer Morty] What? N-No, I don't want to see your Pog collection.

[to the Leader of the Citadel of Ricks]

Morty Smith: I don't renounce Rick, and I never have. I was just trying to protect my sister.

    [to Summer]

Morty Smith: I wanted you to have a normal life. That's something you can't have when Rick shows up. Everything real turns fake. Everything right is wrong. All you know is that you know nothing and he knows everything. And, well -- well, he's not a villain, Summer, but he shouldn't be your hero. He's more like a demon or a super fucked-up god.

Rick Sanchez: [as Leader of the Citadel of Ricks] Let's not suck the ghost of his dick too hard. He was a terrorist and now he's dead.

Morty Smith: [now confident and angry] Oh, yeah? If you think my Rick's dead, he's alive! And if you think you're safe, he's coming for you!

  • Summer Smith: I'll rescue Grandpa myself.

Morty Smith: And how are you gonna do that?

Summer Smith: I don't know yet. I'll make it up as I go. That's what Grandpa Rick does. That's what heroes do.
