Cleo of Varda

Cleo from 5 to 7 p.m.

Before, I was attracted by the face, the cute old lady with the cute head shape in the village, there are always people like that in the world, they have interesting souls.

Cleo is the representative work of the old lady and an important work of the New Wave film. Unlike the industrial films of Hollywood, the French New Wave opposes too much coincidence and drama, and pays more attention to the contingency of life. There will be many random things in the film. Street View, dialogue, and more.

The first time I saw this type of film, I chose a very interesting experimental work, a real-time film with zero rhythm, and the time progress of literature and film is always different from reality. What will happen to the same? What if we spend an hour and a half watching Cleo's hour and a half? This kind of attempt is very bold (why should you care that someone will fall asleep in the theater?) However, the old lady's storytelling ability is first-rate, the camera is skilled and natural, and the change of the protagonist's ideology is not abrupt at all, which is great.

The film is deliberately black and white, with the only color appearing in the tarot divination at the beginning, which separates Claire from the real world in the two hours of fear and despair. Probably only directors like the New Wave can make films like this.

This kind of movie is really kind of boring when you watch it, but it's the kind of fun that you find after watching it.

Also, I really like this poster!

  • Florence, 'Cléo Victoire': Music!

    [singing]

Florence, 'Cléo Victoire': My precious and capricious body, The azure of my daring eyes, My alluring figure is the bait, That will never deceive, Everyone longs to taste, The flavor of my lovely lips.

  • Florence, 'Cléo Victoire': Have you ever been in love?

Antoine: Often, but never as deeply as I wanted. Girls just like to be loved. They're afraid to give themselves, to lose something. The love by halves. Their bodies are playthings, not their lives. So I stop halfway too. Excuse me for saying all this.

Florence, 'Cléo Victoire': No, you're right.
