When we are together, be kind to each other

The broken German and the slow pace of the film make the film look bad. But that's what characterizes this film, the exotic discomfort and slow irritability are the best experience of the lonely, miserable atmosphere of the film

The heroine of the film, Amy, is getting old and full of fat. Although the light and shadow of the whole film are bright, they are all low-saturated colors, which make the perception very depressing. (Fortunately there are only 90 minutes, otherwise it will really feel a little boring later)

The first shot is very classic. Amy and a few people on the other side of the bar are opposed to each other. The people around them are motionless and staring at Amy in silence. They are like the people watching in Kafka's "Castle". The same silence, the same loneliness, the same absurdity. A few red tables enlarge the distance between Amy and everyone

The encounter between Amy and Ali is a strange existence. The feelings between them go beyond "family", "friendship" and "love", which cannot be used to define them. When they first met, I would think about how their emotions were defined and why they were together. But by the end Amy and Ali were hugging each other on the dance floor again, pacing slowly and saying that "you're a free man" and "be nice to each other when we're together" and I started to understand The definition of this feeling no longer matters

The opposition between the individual and the environment is a very old topic, and the focus is on how to express it

In this shot, the two went to eat at Hitler's favorite restaurant. Although Amy couldn't tell the difference between medium rare and medium rare, they still ordered the most expensive dish. After the yin-yang waiter left, the two were stuck in the door frame and waited silently. It's a long shot, a contrast between the silence, the stillness, and the joy of the couple's wedding

In this shot, Amy is trapped behind a stair fence. She was ostracized by the women she worked with because she married a man 20 years his junior. Trapped behind the fence is also her emotional predicament

After they returned from their trip, Amy began to be "accepted" by the environment, and Ali, who was always taking a bath, began to be introduced to her friends to touch his strong muscles. At this point, the outcast at work becomes another woman, who, like the former Amy, has to be trapped behind the fence

The rich information in the language of the lens fills the slow-paced gap, making the atmosphere of despair and loneliness more and more intense, as airtight as a knitted sweater

This despair is more reflected in the deconstruction after the plot is repeated. After Amy began to be accepted by the environment, her relationship with Ali also started to get weird, she didn't make Ali his couscous, Ali had to go to the prostitute who made him couscous. This seems to be asking, does Amy want to be understood by Ali, or does he want to be one of the "everyone"?

There is no simple conclusion, because everyone is a "free" person, all we need to do is to be nice to each other when two people are together

  • Emmi Kurowski: Maybe...

    Ali: Yes?

Emmi Kurowski: Why don't you come up for a while? I'll make us a coffee, and maybe the rain will stop.

    Ali: I'd like to, but...

Emmi Kurowski: People always say "but". And nothing ever changes.
