From today, my postgraduate career can be said to have officially entered the second year, and I am still very confused about how to go in the future. On the one hand, it is the machine learning that I am doing but I am not very interested in, and on the other hand, it is the game development that I like but is controversial, so I hope to understand the life and life of some independent game developers through this film, so as to provide I have some inspiration and motivation.
During the viewing process, I encountered a lot of resonance. First of all, I agree with developer Phil's definition of a game:
The reason why games are called "ninth art" is not unreasonable, and I think interactivity is the most characteristic of games compared to other art forms such as movies, music, literature, etc. It is not a unilateral transmission of what the author wants to express. It requires the recipient to participate in it and use their own wisdom to continuously discover what the game developers are trying to express. This is also where I think game development is more soulful than other programming industries. Every note and frame in the game is more meaningful, and the code is warmer.
Secondly, independent game development is different from large and medium-sized game companies. The content is more inclined to express themselves. Players may not like it, but it must be what the developers want. The games produced by game companies are constantly polished. Considering There are many factors to ensure that players of all colors can like it to the greatest extent.
Then, when it comes to expression, there is also the question of whether the expression can be understood by people. In fact, it is a very sad and regrettable thing if what I have spent a lot of hard work on is not understood or fully understood in the end.
I had a deep understanding of this when I edited the video before. After watching it, most people would say, "Wow, the rhythm is very good", "very sincere" and so on, but no one can see what the video wants to express Deep meaning, but only stay on the visual surface, can not do further thinking. Games are even more so. Most people still regard games as a way of entertainment, and they only care about the level of scores and the use of skills. However, some games are born as works of art, and every plot and dialogue designed by developers has its own The spirit I want to convey, unfortunately, most players still choose to ignore it. This also reminds me of a sentence in the movie "Ready Player One", "It's not about winning. It's about playing." I have to say that some junk games do affect people's attitudes towards games.
Finally, back to the developers themselves. An independent game producer is destined to be a lonely and difficult road, which means a lot of sacrifices, which means that the input and output may be seriously out of balance. Unfortunately, now I can only say that I am not ready for all of this. I hope to find my own position in a large team, hone my skills and abilities, and enrich my life experience before joining independent game development. There is one more year to go for an internship, and this year I have to work hard to make some achievements. BTW, writing papers is so annoying o(╥﹏╥)o
