We are beyond nature and nurture

3.5/5

Four and a half stars for the story, two and a half stars for the narrative.

Let’s talk about the shortcomings first. The narrative angle of the documentary is not objective enough, and the understanding of psychological research and mental illness is limited. It puts scientific research, scientific workers, and mentally ill patients on the opposite side of “normal” and “public”.

But the real event itself is very fascinating, the plot twists and turns, exciting enough to make one's scalp tingle, regardless of the lack of objectivity as a documentary, it is indeed very dramatic, and the viewing experience is very good.

The following spoilers, do not recommend not watching the movie >>>>>>>

Since psychology became a new discipline in the 1950s and 1960s, researchers have been wondering: Nature or Nurture? What factors really make us who we are? Do we really have a choice about our path in life?

In "Three Strangers", the triplets, who have been separated since birth, are artificially placed into three families of blue-collar, middle-class and high-paying families, and their educational philosophies are also different. They met unexpectedly at the age of 19, but found that the three were very similar, whether it was personality, sports or hobbies, the brand of cigarettes they smoked or their aesthetics for women, they were all the same. So, it turns out that we have no choice? It turns out that genes determine our hobbies and choices? The plot takes an unexpected turn at this point, beginning with the suicide of one of the triplets due to depression, and revealing the inexhaustible impact of the trio's different childhoods (though they often moved between different families after being reunited at 19) on their lives. . Among them, strict teacher fathers from middle-class families are extremely harsh on their sons. In the end, he couldn't bear the blow of the three of them breaking up (the news of the reunion of the three was once a household name, the triplets also became TV darlings, New York reds, and jointly opened a "triplets" restaurant together, and the family was like a city), and finally committed suicide. The film recalls the boundless influence of childhood.

However, I hope to believe that even if the natural character may not be bright and open-minded, even if the family upbringing is very wrong, even so, one should not be sentenced to the end. Although Eddie regretted this tragic ending, we, who are struggling in the world, always have to hold on to a little more faith in ourselves. Too many people are too unfit to be parents, and they may not fully realize their eternal scars to others until they see the worst. Maybe all injuries can be recovered somewhat, but it can never be as if it never happened. Rather than saying that I truly believe that people can go on forever, it is a hope and belief.

And then I really liked one of the project leaders and one of the former research assistants (non-twin/multiple project participants) Granny! Charismatic personality. Living in a mansion in California and collecting a lot of art, I remembered that the first sentence of the professor was that he was very handsome. There is a little bit of anti-human temperament of scientific supremacy, and the eyes sparkle when it comes to this project. I can understand that people who don't understand scientific research would be afraid and disgusted by such a "mad scientist" image, but I think it's exactly the kind of enthusiasm a researcher needs. Maybe it's just a matter of being a little paranoid about the direction of your research. Regardless of the many moral conundrums of psychological experimentation, the limitations of psychology today are indeed related to a number of moral limitations. However, the game between different stakeholders may be the charm and challenge of human society.

  • Robert Shafran: When I tell people my story, they don't believe it. I guess I wouldn't believe the story if someone else were telling it, but , I'm telling it and it's true, every word of it.
