It is said that this film is about racial discrimination, and it is true when you look at the title, and some people say that this is a Hollywood youth film.
I don't really agree, I think it's a movie about black people self-dissecting under the status quo of racism
Let's talk about the experience
The content contains racism, youth, love, social problems, and gangsters
As for the shooting method, I don't understand the use of the lens, so I will not comment.
In general, I think the content of the movie is rich, not monotonous, and has some sensational points. It is a watchable movie.
However, after watching the 2-hour movie, there have been several problems entangled
Fathers ask their children to memorize the steps and ten principles to deal with the police. Why?
When Khalil was questioned by the police, he acted irritable and disobedient, why?
When Starr's white friend said he wanted the police to give us an account of Khalil's death, Starr was furious, why?
When the police encounter Khalil, it is easy to shoot just because of one action, why?
When Starr was investigated, the police repeatedly asked Khalil if he was dealing with drugs and if he had a fight, but turned a deaf ear to what was actually happening at the scene. Why?
Suppose a white man faced the same situation as Khalil, the police might say "put your hands up" first, why?
In fact, the film is more objective from the perspectives of blacks and whites, describing the cognitive biases of the two sides on the issue of racial discrimination, which is particularly good.
But why say this is a movie in which black people wake up to the status quo of racism?
Starr has a monologue at the end of the film:
The Hate U Give Little Infants Fuck Everybody
It's not zhe hate you give ,it's zhe hate we give
But we can break the cycle
I think it is the director's self-analysis of the current situation of the conflict
The hatred we give ourselves will eventually kill us, but we will break the vicious circle
As a black man, you must recognize the status quo of being unstable, poor, and generally irritable. After you change yourself, the stereotype or discrimination of white people can be changed, and you can fight for more fairness and rights for yourself (in fact, Don't black people also have a certain prejudice against white people? This prejudice is sometimes a form of racism)
As white people, you must realize that black people have the same human attributes as themselves, and are a member of the world like themselves, in order to truly talk about the equality and democracy they advertise, and to reduce the black people's resistance or dissatisfaction with it.
Only by understanding our own characteristics and shortcomings can we make changes and breakthroughs
Starr gets a part, so she follows certain white society rules
It’s a bit of a pity that the film did not analyze and alert the issue of racial discrimination from the perspective of white people.
