Brief plot line: Contradiction 1 → The general is killed → The second conflict → The housekeeper is killed → The religious mad lady is killed → The gun is lost → The third conflict → Carpet search
Compared with the plot of the second episode, the first episode can only be regarded as a foreshadowing of relaxation. In this episode, the personalities of the characters are more fully manifested, contradictions and conflicts begin to emerge and intensify, and all hypocrites will rip off their suave masks to reveal their true nature. The hints in this episode aren't as frequent as in the first episode, but they're all crucial, and I'll cover them all in this article.
The beginning of this episode is not sloppy at all. It directly puts everyone in the gathering scene of breakfast, and continues to dig deeper into the problem of the reduction of soldiers on the dining table in the previous episode.
Paradox 1: Who moved our soldiers?
Miss Claythorne was the trigger for this conflict. She asked Doctor Armstrong first, then General Macarthur, who had just come in, and of course got a negative answer. At this point, the doctor bounced the bullet to Claythorne, believing that she was yelling at the thief to catch the thief.
Afterwards, the housekeeper multiplied the breakfast eggs, and the screenwriter handed this cut-off time to Ms. Brent, a religious madman. On such a sad and strange morning, she neither sympathized with the world nor persuaded others, but cared about today's problems. Whether the eggs were more or less cooked for four minutes precisely ( four minutes precisely ), this little detail revealed her hypocrisy and indifference to the fullest. Just look at the embarrassed look on the table after she asked this question:
Back to our contradictions. Immediately afterwards, after asking the same question to the housekeeper Rogers, Claythorne doubted the doctor again, questioning that he must have other purposes for carrying the medicine box as a guest, and asked to search his box, which became the fuse of the conflict. The direct result of this contradiction is that the doctor confessed the real purpose of his trip - accepting Mr. Owen's invitation to become a full-time doctor for Mrs. Owen, who has a female mental illness, and pointing the finger at Judge Wargrave; The fact that the judge (had) had cancer (this detail seems unrelated to the main plot, but it is not, hold on for now). Then, in the presence of everyone else, police officer Blore confirmed that there was no problem with their medicine, and the conflict came to an end. However, there is another detail that is also intriguing, that is, the enraged doctor, after proving his innocence, threw up Claythorne's suitcase, and Claythorne accepted the doctor's domineering words that she did not know. This small scene is not only the director's intention to imply that the two "have a good relationship", but also to show the sensitivity and hysteria of the doctor, but also to reflect the strict social hierarchy in the UK at that time. Not on an equal footing.
The Second Contradiction: Mr. UN Owen
The second contradiction is the mildest contradiction in this episode and even the whole play. It is more like a concentrated discussion than a contradiction. The background that must be explained is that Lombard, Blore, Armstrong and others have had doubts about the owner of this manor---UN Owen. Lombard believes that he is the mastermind of the incident, which is a very correct direction of reasoning (oh we The handsome and brainy Lombard~ nympho face), in the process of searching for clues, the other two were also surprised to find that Lombard actually had a revolver (also one of the male protagonists in the second half of the show, trust me), deepening Alleviate their suspicions of the already bohemian Lombard. On the other hand, General Macarthur has also been honorably received a lunch box.
(Additionally: At this time, you can see the tentative alliance relationship : the doctor and the sheriff who often sing together, Claythorne and Lombard who cares about her; hostile relationship : it is between the previous two CPs, it can also be seen from here that they are definitely The one who will go on until the end. At this time, it is only the hostility of the two policemen to Lombard and the doctor to Miss C. However, after the death of the housekeeper, Miss C angered Blore again, and the barriers between the two factions have quietly formed. .)
Back to the topic. At this time, a storm was already brewing. Everyone alive (except Steward Rogers) held a small meeting in the small parlor to find out what the purpose of this Owen was . Lombard, who was relying on his intuition, broke the silence and said that this Owen must be on the island, and started the discussion under the leadership of the sheriff doctor. The judge asked why Lombard was carrying a gun, the first key point . Lombard then confessed his intention to come to the island, saying that there would be special circumstances at any time, so he prepared a gun (here, the sheriff doctor and others threatened Lombard to surrender his gun, but Lombard firmly refused, which deepened the contradiction between them). People who never confessed then talked about why they were here: Miss Claythorne was hired by Mr Owen to be a secretary, Judge Wargrave came here on the recommendation of a friend, and Ms Brent was to get Mrs Owen's moral education cause. Favor, Officer Blore bluntly said that the owner of the manor told him that someone had used a fake identity here and asked him to assist in the investigation. The second key point is Judge Wargrave's inference about UN Owen. He deciphered the meaning of the name (unknown), agreed with Lombard that the murderer must be on the island, and finally said, "The murderer is one of us." The first time there is nothing here. I feel that the second brush is really upside down. . .
Third contradiction: Lombard: Who moved my pistol?
This conflict pushed the tension of the whole episode to a climax . The resulting almost frantic search also allowed the audience to smell a hint of madness and depression as the protagonists gradually lost their minds.
The background that I have to mention is that there are only five people at this time: two pairs of CPs and judges. The housekeeper and Ms. Brent died tragically one after another (watch warning: especially the housekeeper's death is extremely tragic. It is recommended that babies who don't like heavy tastes should not look directly, otherwise it may cause serious discomfort), coupled with the gloomy weather, the atmosphere of terror has enveloped the entire manor . At this time, Lombard returned to the house after collecting the body of the housekeeper and found that the pistol was missing, and the whole staff met again. The focus of the question is, of course, who took the revolver . Dr. Armstrong first suggested that Lombard directed and acted the show, which Blore agreed, and then Lombard denied and questioned why Sheriff Blore had been upstairs for so long, arguing that everyone present was a suspect.
Here I want to give a close-up of the doctor. At this time, he should be the first to enter a state of hysteria. He is a sensitive person on weekdays (maybe due to the psychological trauma left by the improper handling of the patient) , in this conflict, he not only fired at Lombard first, but also excitedly accused the people in front of killing him; after hearing the alibi of the sheriff, the doctor laughed weirdly. The laughter that comes out only when under heavy pressure and despair is like wild laughter and roaring, and later facts also prove that the doctor is indeed the most vulnerable one, and it is difficult to keep calm in times of crisis.
(It’s a pity that the GIF can’t be uploaded. When Armstrong’s laughter came out, I thought that something strange was chirping...)
In this conflict, the last mask of every survivor was torn off, and the last bit of trust also fell apart. So they started a carpet search. Everyone took off their jackets and stood outside their rooms waiting for others to check.
That is, here, someone has made a little change . Like Miss Claythorne . She who had justly said to Lombard "I'm definitely not the kind of person you imagine", she took the initiative to show her love to Lombard. Maybe she was wearing a swimsuit from the past, maybe it was hinted by the iron hook on the ceiling, and now she seems to be changing under the lure of the mysterious atmosphere of death. In the words of Lombard in this episode, she may gradually admit that "I who is it". In addition, the iron hook on the ceiling, which appeared repeatedly after that, was officially revealed for the first time, which made the atmosphere of gloomy, terrifying and despairing even heavier.
Here, Claythorne's faint smile evoked the corners of his mouth, which was just right, not bright, but determined. The two even changed their names, she was Vera and Lombard became Phillip. With this unexpected but reasonable lens, the screenwriter gently tore off an inconspicuous corner of Claythorne (vera)'s dignified human mask.
After searching each person's bedroom, everyone began to search the living room, the living room and other rooms, where Lombard began to show obvious anger and irritability: This contradiction successfully separated everyone. The show goes through dinner with everyone absent-mindedly eating canned food, busy thinking, doubting, and scrutinizing others. It can be said that this slaughter feast has reached the main course stage, and the arrow is on the string, and it has to be sent .
